Panarama roof maintenance question

Hi guys, I did the 20k service on my wife's 2009 E350 today, and I know it calls out lubricating the rails on the Panarama roof, but I am not sure what type of lubricant to use (What does MB call for or use)?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, where to apply the lube would make my experience even easier. :D

Thanks,

The pan roof service is basiclly just applying some lubication like silicone spray or white grease in the tracks on the front slider tracks for the sunroof and ensuring the inner shade slider one touch is functioning properly. (holding the roof button close until the shade is closed and then holding it open for a few seconds. exactly what you would need to do to reprogram all the one touch features if you where to every discount your battery.

Actually it's more than just "applying some lubrication."

If you're going to do the service for your car, be sure to get the tech service sheets for the appropriate work. These cars are a bit esoteric and not exactly "normal." In the end it's up to you, but I'm personally happier doing it the way the MB engineers intended.

The proper lube is Spezial-Gleitmittel fur Glasschiebedacher. It comes in a 30 ml (1 fl oz) container, and is expensive but that 30 ml will last the lifetime of the car. If you're on good terms with your dealer you could ask them to do it. It only requires a few drops in the correct places, DO NOT over lube all the parts with just "some lubrication."

Mercedes-Benz Gleitpaste part number 001 989 14 51: "rail grease specified." (you might check on that part number, I'm not 100% sure on it but that's what I have in my notes from the dealer.)

Here is a pic from the service sheet. I'd buy the MB service sheets and/or get a subscription to STAR Tekinfo if you are truly interested in doing the service yourself, and doing it correctly. http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/

Thanks for posting the price from parts.com.

My dealer does a pano service "free" as part of each 10k service. My tech showed me how to do it last time, but of course I ended up buying the Gleitpaste from them for $75. So there's never really a free lunch. :)

(Actually I shouldn't complain since my dealer has been stellar and does everything correctly and yet is always competitive in pricing. Plus they have two AMG techs and both have shown me how to do a lot of my own maintenance.)

Some great information

Awesome thread and information. I will probably buy the same grease MB calls out for, but I guess I will check for that alternative grease you guys were talking about. I don't skimp on stuff, but $30 - $40 is a good chunk if it will do the same thing.

Thanks guys!!!!
