Dear W140 friends, I would like to discuss oil separator in M119.970 engine;

this is the only video I have found;

So, it is said in the video that bad oil separator which looks to me as a small piece of plastics can cause white smoke from exhaust and high oil consumption. My car has such troubles and I have invested enormous amount of money, time and nerves in last 17 years to fix it with no success. So, what do you think? i do not recall any similar discussion on this forum in last 18 years of my membership.

I have ordered both parts (separator + funnel) and I would like to know if this is really so crucial for my engine (M119.970). My separator was in pieces and funnel is hard as rock, so no sealing of small metal tube which is part of the valve cover (up and left of yellow/orange glove):

Anyway, I will know in few days but it would be good to hear some experienced opinions.

I am almost sure that explanation of how so called oil separator works in the above video is not correct. In my mind the oil separator is a valve which prevents oil fumes going from crankcase into intake manifold at idle or low speed, and it opens the path for oil fumes at higher rpm, in general.

i just have finished installation of new oil separator and after test drive there is no more smoke/smell out of tailpipe at idle or at high speeds. So after 17 years of rough idle and stinky ride the problem is fixed. It was oil smell and white or grey smoke which bothered me and caused pollution of converter most probably. i have washed the aftermarket cat with car washing foam and it seems the cat works at first sight. there is ca 60 to 70 deg. C difference between inlet and outlet pipe at 2500 rpm (car in N) after a short ride. Foam for car washing contains sodium hydroxide.
