I guess I've always just had a partial oil jug, this time around I started fresh. Siphoned all the oil out, filled and it took both 5qt jugs to hit just below the max mark on the dipstick.

Is that normal? I read the change quantity is 8/8.5qt, but maybe thats to the "low" mark on the dipstick?

Love checking the oil and still seeing it at the max mark, doesn't burn a drop at 158k!

Let the car go cold, you will find its over filled ,because the engine oil is still in the top part of the engine , when it is hot it will only drain down as it gets cold;;never check oil in any hot engine ... When i do mine i put in 3/4 of what the engine needs ,start the car for a few seconds,,then i turn engine off ,,,let the engine go cold, now check again and if low i will put a bit more oil in ,and do the same again,, start it and stop it,, and again let it go cold the oil will drain down and reach the sump area to give a good reading on the dip stick '. Dont drive with ..or ruin the engine, until you remove some oil .Cost my friend a new engine, clutch, and radiator ,, after he over filled his 3 year old car he always used i gallon to fill his small engine .But he never noticed the gallon can he bought had 1/4 extra oil in it. because it was special deal at the time .

I filled it via the crankcase which I usually fill via the oil filter, I wonder if your thought is correct and oil has still not drained down? (which in my head sounds odd…) I will recheck this morning after its sat all night.

updating that after a few days the oil did slowly increase. Pulled 1+1/2qt out and now its back in order.
Guess lesson learned its really best to not refill via the crankcase outside of a small top up- just be patient and let the oil filter housing drain down to the sump and you get an immediately accurate level. There must be some pockets in the crankcase/timing case that holds an extra quart and needs some driving to let it filter down. Beyond my head "how" thats possible, but the dipstick didnt lie for 10miles where it continually got higher after each check.
