Navigation Map Update

I saw on the Mercedes Me app that our EQB automatically updated the navigation maps twice with Over The Air (OTA) updates. I noticed it was “2022”. I suspected that was a little dated/old, logged into my wife’s account on a computer, and dug around to find the navigation map update area.

The EQB only has USB C type sockets and I only have USB A (standard) USB sticks. You can either try to download a single region, a selection of a number of regions (up to the capacity of your USB storage), or the whole (in our case) North America map. I tried to update the whole NA (which includes Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico) by purchasing a 32 GB USB A type stick and USB C to A cable, (Best Buy did not have such a small USB C stick at my local Pasadena store in stock). Listed as 23.x GB, I needed a 32 GB stick or larger.

. It crashed twice, so I used a 16 GB stick to update California, Nevada, and Hawaii which was 2.x GB. This succeeded, so I tried multiple regions to fill up the stick to 13 GB the second round, and the third round two Northeast US regions and Canada (6.9 GB) the third round.

I took pictures to keep track of the regions I already covered because it did not seem to update right away after the CA, NV, HI update, that it was already updated.

After the third round I went back to the computer to try to verify I got everything and it finally updated that there were 0 regions left to update…

I did not try to figure out what the problem was with the 32 GB USB stick. Fortunately the crashes did not permanently damage/destroy the navigation, which I’ve seen happen at least on other vehicles such as Cadillac. I was quite frightened…

It doesn’t make sense that it can store 23+ GB worth of map data and not be able to access a 32 GB stick. It would take an extra bit of 0/1 to be able to access 23 GB vs 16 GB so if it can handle that much it should work with 32 Gb USB stick. (I know just enough about computers to say I comprehend that much). It may be an incompatibility with that particular USB or the data was somehow corrupted on the stick.

Luckily at least for now these updates have been completely free…

All a bit worrying in a way. I've never owned a car new enough I've had to update the nav!
I've had the use of a large number of different new cars but they're always gone by 3 years at the latest.
So I worry that manufacturers only care about that sort of period of time with these things.

Anyway you got there in the end!

We were making a trip to the “High Desert” aka Palmdale, CA for a debutant ball and came back late at night. As I understand the navigation calculates the best route including traffic and speed limits. While going there was uneventful directing us via 210 W, 5 N, and 14 N, the drive back directed us via Angeles Forest HWY and Angeles Crest HWY. I noticed in most if not all the listed speed limit was 15 MPH lower than the one on the Nav screen, which is why it thought that was the optimal route. While I am capable of driving that mountainous windy road it would probably have routed us around 14 S, 5 S, then 210 E had it the correct speed limit data.

I have tried at least three times to find where I can report the erroneous speed limit data. The Mercedes Me webpages appear to be incomplete as a few links lead to page not found type responses. I tried calling (it was kind of after business hours) and accidentally was transferred to what appeared to be road side assistance. The best I could do was leave “Feedback” with a frown and the explanation of why: I couldn’t find a way to report map data errata whereas although challenging I could with Honda’s Garmin maps.

Sigh…

Finally a map update is available for our EQB, made available sometime within the last 24 hours (roughly). I just ordered for local pickup a 64 GB drive to try. Thank you for sharing that by the way. (I bumped into the note on the Canadian Mercedes site, whereas for the US it doesn't appear to mention what size to use)...

Nice to hear from you again. Was having problems getting manual updates to work with my previous 64GB memory stick. In the end I concluded it must be faulty so picked up a Sandisk 128GB memory stick from my local BestBuy for only CAD24.00. It had both USB A and USC interfaces (one at each end). Very useful not to say nifty! It worked like a charm. My maps are now at 2023 (V17.0) vs. 2023 (V15.0) when they were last updated in the summer.

BTW, your post #6 in this thread mentioned erroneous speed limit data. My vehicle uses one or more of its forward facing cameras to acquire this information. The speed limit display will show blank or the previously displayed limit until such time as the system "sees" a speed limit sign. The display switches to the most recent information more or less immediately the vehicle passes the sign. However, there can be situations where the system doesn't "see" a sign showing a changed limit e.g., when a clear view of the sign is obscured. I'm fairly certain all MB vehicles that display speed limit information do so using a similar system. While the system is useful, there are times when it shows the wrong information.

@cruiserchris Yes luckily a local BestBuy had a 64 GB SanDisk Duo in stock so I immediately ordered it for local pick-up. It is very convenient as my PC only has USB A ports.

I have no idea whether the EQB has capability to read the speed limit signs. I know in AUTO mode (which my son found reading the manual, I believe in D pull and hold the + steering wheel paddle shifter), it automatically slows down for slower/stopped traffic in front. It does not show any indication that it reads anything beyond that. I suspect it fully depends on GPS linked speed limit data in it’s database…

I did notice that the map update is a lot later (in the year) than usual/normal. I am still waiting for Garmin to offer an update for our ‘18 Honda Clarity. Hopefully it was because they were correcting some speed limit data! 😬
