I filled up my tank with gas however the fuel gauge stayed on empty and has remained this way for the past 3 days. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi tredja,
I have the same problem with my 1998 ML 320. I have read on previous post that disconnecting the connector on the driver side rear will re boot the sending unit. I tried it and it works. The key should be on the off position before diconnecting the connector. Remove connection ( it is attched to the right rear chassis) turn the ignition switch to 2 position ( not starting) and connect the connector. It should reboot the sending unit. You wond muss the connector. Give it a try. It worked with my 98. Good luck.

Although it hasn't happened in our M yet, the sending units have failed in both our SL and the E class- - - seems to be another one of those MB quality control issues.

You might put the year of your Benz and your location in your profile-- it'll get you better answers to your issues.

Welcome to the forum.

I had the same problem on a 2000 CLK 320 after I changed to a cheaper, though same octane gasoline. Problem went away after I changed back. Later, I heard about some higher sulfer gasolines causing similar malfunctions.

Higher sulfer oils are typically from S. America and Venezuela--refined in the southeast refineries (many of which are shut down at present).

I've not heard that the type of fuel would cause the problem, but I suppose anything's possible... or it could be one of those periodical Mercedes gremlins.[}:)]

I had my fuel sending units replaced on a 2000 C230. The dealer said that it's a common problem, because of bad fuels. Recently, after filling up at Costco, the Check Engine light came on. The light stayed on until my next fill up, this time at another station. And yes, I only use premium fuels. The check engine light has not illuminated since. Lesson learned -- saving a few pennies a gallon is not worth it in the long run.

I bought an 2001 ML320 with 71K miles yesterday and I have the same problem with the Fuel Guage Indicator. I completely filled the tank with premium gas and the fuel guage is is showing empty. Can you please explain how you fixed the issue?

Thanks much
Raj

Exact same thing happened to me the day after I bought it. 2001 with 57000 miles on it. Fuel gauge was on half and after I filled with premium the gauge kept dropping till it was empty. I put 22 mile on a full tank and it is showing empty.

I had the same problem after using 92 gas at BJs Wholesale for a 2000 C230 Kompressor. The gas tank was filled and the fuel gauge indicator went to empty immediately. I pulled over several times and restarted the vehicle but the fuel gauge indicator stayed on empty. The next move was to pull over and reset the gas cap. This worked after two more stop and starts. In addition, I noticed the rpms went up higher than usual to 3200.

ML320 gas gauge - easy fix

If your gas gauge goes to "empty" after a fill-up this is the result of topping-off and then not tightening the gas cap enough. The solution is to drive enough miles to burn off a few gallons, then 1. turn the vehicle off 2. remove the gas cap 3. put the gas cap back on and tighten beyond 3 clicks. Restart your ML320 and see the guage working again!

My 98 ML320 Gas reading issue

Filled my car up today and all of a sudden the gas tank reads empty, so if I disconnect the sending unit it will reboot the system? Maybe I should replace the sending unit? Have you guys had success with this procedure, is this a common problem for this model?

Just pull fuse #5(Instrument cluster) on the fuse panel on the interior front passenger side then put the fuse back in. Make sure there is less than 1/2 a tank of gas when you do this or it won't calibrate properly. I encountered this problem after I filled up in South Carolina. As it turns out they use a much higher ethanol content than my area.

I have the same fuel gauge issue with a 2006 ML350 . Guage reads correctly but intermittently reads empty. I would like to try to reboot the sender but cannot locate the sender connection . Is connector behind the rear removable cover panel inside the rear cargo area or under the car on the frame ?
Thanks
Tom

My 2005 SL500 has a similar problem with the fuel gauge level reading empty. Three weeks ago is read 3/4 empty and then simply dropped to empty and stayed there. Can anyone give me advice on how this can be fixed? Thanks in advance>
