Hello~ I have replaced all the interior lights with LED, and I have just got my dome light changed to LED as well. Actually it was pretty easy to take off the front and rear dome after few times of trying.

Front Dome:
1. To take off the front dome ,just simply use a flat head to unclip the little plastic cover above(surround) the rear-view mirror, and then slide off that plastic cover inorder to take off the dome, otherwise the plastic cover would be blocking the way.

2. After sliding off the plastic cover, use a flashlight to look up, you should see two black buttons on both left and right side. Simply push them in with both hands and pull it down at the same time (don't need too much force to pull it down). The whole dome should then be released down.

3. To change the light bulbs, you should see two little buttons thingy on the black cover where the bulbs locate. Just turn the buttons counter-clock wise to unlock the buttons so you can take out the bulbs to replace them. Clock-wise to lock them back. P.S. If the LED bulbs did not light up after the replacement, try to take out the button(with bulb) and put it back in again with the opposite direction u put it in before.

4. Test all the bulbs before pushing the dome back in! ;)

Rear Dome:
1. Use a flat head to pry from the rear(towards the rear window) of the dome. P.S. DO IT SLOWLY! DON'T RUSH!! and then give the dome a little pull at the rear end while prying it down. The dome should come off half of its way (that's what happened to mine, couldn't got it completly off the roof).

2. Just sneaks your hand through the gap to unlock(counter-clock wise) the bulb buttons, and replace the bulbs.

3. AGAIN! if bulbs do not light up, try opposite direcion! AND!!! CHECK THE BULBS BEFORE PUSHING THE DOME BACK IN!! :p

Hope these info would help anyone who'd like to change the dome lights on their w211! X)

(2) Rear Dome Light:194 LED Wedge Bulbs <<there're four light bulbs on the rear dome, but don't change the two "reading" lights to LED bulbs, or they would blink. I kept the OEM bulbs there since those two reading lights wouldn't be used often anways.>>

(2) Foot Area Lights (Back left and right Passengers): 36mm Polarg B1 Hybrid M-28 Dome Bulbs. P.S. All the foot area lights would blink if you replace the back passengers foot area lights with LED bulbs. So you might want to use regular bulbs (12v5w/12v10w), which I have used the Polarg bulbs (same bulbs as the license plate bulbs).
(4) Under Door Lights (Front/Back Driver/Passenger): 39mm Festoon Dome Bulbs
(1) Glove box lights: 39mm Festoon Dome Bulbs

If you prefer a brighter LED dome lights, go for the 194 6-LED/High Power LED bulbs or PIAA 194 Super Bright Bulbs(not LED bulbs). ;)

I got my LEDs from ebay,,

Hi,

Beside the 194 Wedge Bulbs Map reading lights on the front light dome, what are the type of bulbs for the main light for the front dome? Or they are all just 194?
How many bulbs (not counting the ambient light) are there in total for the front dome lights?
Are there only 4 194 Wedge Bulbs in total for the rear dome lighting?
Don't you have light flickering or error msg on your licence plate LED lights?

Thank you!

Are the Ambient Lights LED as well? If so, are they too bright?

#7 ·
Yeah, the ones that stay on all the time at night. Did you leave those stock?

#12 · (Edited)
i know its been along time, but i just got 8 39mm led festoon bulbs. for under the doors and the footwell lights,

How do you get the footwell lights to stay on at night? and also i cant get the door lights to come on?

edit: i got the door lights on by going into settings surround lights, they were already on but turning them off and then on got it to work. As for the footwell lights they are dim all the time, even when the door is opened. I am not sure if this is because i put led bulbs on the rear footwells aswell. The rear footwells flicker but then they stay normal so i have left them, does anyone know if having led lights in the rear footwell is causing the dimness in the front??

Finally has anyone managed to change the ambient dome light? if so what bulbs are required and how many for the front and back..

Thanks
jazz

Hello Jazz, you can't put LEDs on the rear footwells, they causes other LED lights to flick in the car and also the front footwells problem too. I just left mine in regular bulbs for the two rear footwells (as described in the beginning of the thread). Well..I changed them to white color regular bulbs to match the LEDs in the car, so you might want to do that as well. The flicking and front footwells problem should be solved after you changed the rear footwells back to regular light bulbs! good luck

Happy new years!

Happy new year to you to.

I am going to change the rear footweel leds out back to the normal bulbs,

did you change the ambient surround light?

if so do you know what bulbs you used.

I was going to change the lights that come on when you open the door in the surround lights but i was looking at the leds and they dont look like they will light up the car when the door is open as well as a normal filament bulb.

A HAPPY New Year 2010 to one & all!
Nelson is right about the rear foot well bubs.
U have to leave them in stock halogen festoon bulb or else
u will also messed up with the front foot well white LEDs bulbs.
In summary- Front foot well U can change the L/R to LED festoon bulbs
Rear- U keep the stock Halogen festoon bulbs and do not change them.
Like Nelson, I've also changed my front dome/map reading & rear dome lights to white LEDs
(all T10s)
The 2 vanity mirrors L/R Light, Glove Compartment Light & the 4 doors Courtesy light to white LEDs.
In the boot, I managed to change the L/R side lights to white LEDs but not the T10 bulb
on the inside of the boot lid. I just change it to 1 of those dark blue colored T10 halogen bulb to give the whitish look.
The licence plate bulbs, I managed to change them to white LEDs festoon bulbs with built in resistor from an eBay Seller in Germany.
BTW I sold off my W211 last Oct '09 and changed to an Audi Q5.

thanks, for the reply

i just changed the rear footwells to normal bulbs and all seems to be working. I have order 6 led bulbs to change out the map lights and front/rear dome lights.
Would you recommend blue or white for the dome lights? If blue should i match the footwell lights also?

I have a few spare 39mm white led festoon bulbs , you said you changed
''In the boot, I managed to change the L/R side lights to white LEDs but not the T10 bulb''

Could you tell me what bulb you used for the boot and has anyone changed the ambient bulbs????

Thanks Jazz

As cool as the ambient light thing is.. I think it's more of distraction during night driving than a benefit.. It looks like I can tone it down (it's on 3 of 5, I can move it to 1), but then I lose the "coolness" factor. Hopefully I can convince myself that nighttime vision safety is of higher value than looking cool ;)

Is there any way to change the ambient light ("the orange light bar thing surround the dome")?
In my 2005 E55's center dome light at least, the ambient light is generated using 8 tiny surface mounted LEDs that illuminate the plastic optic rings. (Certainly not replaceable without board level soldering, if possible at all.)

You can see 2 rows of 3 LEDs on the left edge, and a single LED on both the upper right and lower right edge in attached photo P1030891a800.JPG.

Photos P1030892 and P1030893 show the 4 notches in the white dome frame, and the 4 tabs in the ceiling that keep the dome light held up.

I just did a LED upgrade to our LX450. I used the festoons in the doors that I got froom superbrightleds but they are weak to say the least. They do save power though for days I'm out camping and don't shut the door all the way. No more dead battery in the woods.

For the map and domes I put in some 12 cool blue SMD modules (they come with three adapters for any type of light you have. They are SUPER BRIGHT. Almost blinding. I'll have to go out to the E320 and see if they will fit in there. They are very thin and not that much surface area so I think they will. I got 3 of them off of ebay shipped for $20.

I also replaced all my bulbs with LED but am now having dead battery issues. Is anyone else having battery issues too? My car battery dies every few weeks. its really annoying. Mercedes also wont replace parts on my car that could be causing the problem because they are claiming that the "aftermarket LED's" as the cause. Complete bullshit. That coupled with the random quarks that the LED's create with the lighting, I am just going to reinstall the OEM bulbs :( There goes 10 hours of my life down the drain

I don't get the fixation with interior LED lights. IMO they give it a cold Dr.'s office vibe. Not befitting to a luxury car ambiance especially.
