I bought an Icarsoft MB 3.0 unit to try to see what is causing my SRS light to stay on. This reader will not automatically read the VIN of my 1999 W210 wagon. It also will not reat the SRS or much of anything else. When I plug it into the 38 pin connector, even less is able to be read. Any secrets? Yes the car was on and even running for some of the test. I appreciate help.

Yes. The generic black one allows you to access only the Engine computer. If you open the 38-pin connector you will see only 3 wires, ground power and ECU connect signal wire. You need a Benz adapter specific to Icarsoft. Click on the link below. It is to give you some idea what it looks like. You can shop around and get it cheaper somewhere else.

Hello, received by icarsoft red 38 pin connector. I have found that instructions and support for this reader is almost non existant on the net. If I am wrong please correct me and direct me. Anyway, I plugged it in and with the motor running and just the ignition on, most of the features report "not supported". I have not found the SRS section but am not hopeful after all the encounters of other systems. Im using Icarsoft MB 3.0 with current software running. Any guidance or help is certainly appreciated.

6.1.1.3 Vehicle Select When the vehicle cannot be retrieved automatically through the ECU of the vehicle, or the specific VIN is unknown, you can manually select the vehicle. Or in some cases, when the user selects vehicle selection rather than vehicle VIN scanning, the system will provide the option of vehicle selection, and the user can select the vehicle model, model year, etc. according to his own model. To perform vehicle selection:
1) Click the diagnostic application button in the device’s job menu. Vehicle menu display.
2) Select the brand of the test vehicle.
3) Choose the "vehicle selection" option to make a series of selections according to the on-screen prompts, select the correct vehicle model, model year, etc.
4) Select step by step according to the screen prompts, and finally enter the list of diagnosis modes.
5) The user performs various operations by selecting the diagnostic mode.

6.1.2 Diagnostic mode The scan tool provides five diagnostic modes for users to choose, as shown in the figure below: Quick Test, Auto Scan, Control Unit, Service, Quick Erase. For the quick erase mode, it is in the form of a button. Users need to go to the next layer to quickly clear the vehicle fault information recorded in the diagnosis process.

When you are in the SRS menu (read codes, clear codes etc) do you have the view data option? If so select that and look at the status of the SRS light.

Note that if your car battery has low voltage, the SRS light will not clear in 4 to 20 seconds after you turned the ignition key to position 2.

I can select view the srs warning light. when selected it shows "F" and occasionally blinks N/A, but holds on F. There is a counter at the top of the display that is counting something and I stopped the test at 295. What does F mean and is that the indicated cause of the light staying on. The SRS system is still passing and the voltage is 12.08 with the motor off.

"F" = Fault.

This means that the Airbag module detected a circuit fault in SRS light located on the instrument cluster. The SRS bulb circuit is simple, in that on one side you have switched 12V power (active when the ignition switch is in positions 1, and 2), and the other side is grounded by the SRS module to turn the SRS light on. So, if the SRS light control wire has a short to ground, the light will be on all the time, regardless of any other SRS faults, and this condition will be detected, and flagged by the SRS module. Why this fault is not reported by ICarsoft is beyond me, but there is a fault code for it (B1476).

Check the status of other live data for the airbags, seatbelt tensioners, sensors etc. to make sure that there are no faults (F).

If so,
You need to locate the Airbag module (behind the ashtray in the center console)

With key in your pocket, remove the connector.

Insert the key and start the engine.

If the SRS light is still ON, then you have a wire shorted to ground.

If the SRS light goes OFF, you have a bad SRS module.

Great overview of the issue. I trust others are finding this interesting. I will proceed to test as you describe and report back. I am also going to retest the ABS/SRS components as I find being new to this, when I retest my technique improves and I get a clearer outcome. Thank you for your time on this. More to come re report. The previous owner installed a bluetooth radio and it is not out of the relm of possibility that the abs unit was unplugged or jostled during that install.
I also surmise that keeping the key in my pocket is affirming it is not in the ignition when messing with the abs connectors, leading to discharge?

Yes. Always remove the key before you work on any SRS component, and make sure everything is connected as they should before inserting the key and turning the ignition ON. In this case, you are removing the SRS module connector, essentially disconnecting the power to the SRS module, so it is OK to turn the ignition ON with the module disconnected, and start the engine. After the test, turn the ignition OFF, reinstall the connector with key OUT.

Ok, last night I re scanned the ABS. When I opened up my search to all sensors of the ABS, I got across the board F--fail. Even without disconnecting the box I think this points to a bad or intermittent SRS control box. I also found in the purchase notes that the SRS light would sporadically come on and go out. I think this is permanent now. That being said, in my research I see that a new box needs to be fed some information but a similar used unit does not. It bolts right in. I will check the connection for sure when I get under the cig cover regarding the connection being solid. But if I need to find a used unit on Ebay, How close does it have to be to my unit, can it be re scanned or reset and is there truth to the fact it does not have to be re scanned to work. Please let me know my next steps. Thank you.
