How much power can the OM617 handle?

Guys,

Just out of curiosity, how much power could one squeeze out of the 617 while keeping it relatively reliable? I'm not talking about stripping it down to the block, boring out cylinders, and generally prepping a car for racing (ie the w123 drift wagon).

I'm thinking along the lines of a freer-flowing exhaust, better air intake (intercooler perhaps?), a bigger/improved/moar turbocharger, and maybe change the cams?

200hp + 300lb-ft doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for this engine. I'd love to hear everyone's opinions!

Thanks for indulging me.

our exhaust is the equivalent to a glass pack on a gas-job, straight through, minimal silencing, not much improvement there

intake-diesel, so enormous intake, no need to port and polish because of the turbo...no improvement there...but an inter-cooler would help-but be minimal, when you start getting in the 200's you might look there for a few horses, but the cost isn't beneficial(my opinion)

more boost and more fuel are the biggest thing that need to be solved, the ALDA can only be adjusted so much for added boost

you could deck the block or head in hopes of raising compression, you might find a few hidden horses there, but watch for piston clearance

another thing is balancing-while it may not add power, it could rob it...this of course requires tearing the block down-again not worth it unless racing at high RPM for extended amounts of time

With a stock IP and turbo you can reach about 150 hp with tuning, no IC needed. Removing the rear muffler WILL improve the engines response as it does restrict exhaust flow. Removing the center muffler/resonator does not do as much good and soon the drone becomes annoying. Going to a larger exhaust is difficult as there is not much room following the stock exhaust pathway for a larger exhaust.

I imagine at 300hp this little car would have been pretty nasty, did he have anything done to the trans? Your looking more than double the stock hp.. Hell my 6.5 doesn't even have 300hp and it's pretty well built -_-

even 175 hp in my 300D non-turbo 5 speed would make it zippy

if only i had the know-how and the funds....anyone can just swap another motor in but the real beauty would be to see how much power these motors could handle on mostly stock internals

The Super Turbo Diesel forum has a wealth of knowledge on the topic.

Generally speaking the reliability of modifications is a direct result of the amount of engineering and the reliability of all the systems altered from the factory setup. Making adjustments to the stock equipment is your safest bet. Any further than that and you are subject to the quality of "field engineered" components. Remember, just because some guy online made it run is not a guarantee that it will work for you.

Personally, If I wanted a more powerful Diesel, I would just buy a W210...
