I have a friend who just got a new shift knob for his 1992 230E..He told me that the original shift knob is molded into the end of the shifter stick and there is somewhat like a round ball at the end. he cut the roundball just to fit the new knob...

Darn this is tricky then.... I'm afraid I won't be going to the extent..

 

Why doesn't anybody do a search[8)][]

All you have to do is remove the wood console then remove the plastic covering, move the rubber boot up and unscrew the bolt at the bottom of the shaft.

You can then replace the shift knob with something similar or you can buy an adapter shaft which will allow you to put any newer mercedes shift knob on the shaft.

 

hmmm... i see..

I think this adapter shaft + knob thing will probably set me back around US$100+ at least..

 

Bummer. Ok so take out the ony you have and have it cut just below the current knob.
