Headlight retainer clip?

My wife's 06 R350 has been having some intermittent headlight problems, while at the dealer today the mechanic said it was because the clip that retains the bulb in the housing was missing. The catch was that he told me they had to order the entire housing to get the clip as it wasn't available to just order the clip solo. BTW $490 for the assembly. Anyone have a similar issue they've fixed or know of a way to order just the part i need. Anyone upgrade their headlight and have a spare clip laying around?

Thanks for the help

Nadeaux,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I've changed my headlight bulbs at least 4 times since July 07 when we purchased our car. I dropped one of the clips - outside of the housing. It fell onto the splash pan beneath the engine. I was able to retrieve it with a magnetic probe and didn't have to go without a light or try to obtain a new clip.

In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to have to pay $490 to get an item that shouldn't cost more than $1.50 tops.

Call MBUSA and get the part number. Use it to call other dealers' parts department. See if they have the item for sale.

Hi guys,

Anyone figured out a solution to finding headlight clips?

I bought an HID kit and can't slide the wires through the OEM clip opening.

I can cut the clip to slide the wires in, but I am afraid to cut it and have problems later.

I called the dealers and they all say that the clip is not sold separately.

Has anyone found a solution?

I see that the Mtec brand gives a clip (looks like a "C", so you can slide the wires into it), so I know they exist, but where could I find the clip only. (?)

Thanks.

I have a question....How are you missing the headlight bulb retainer clip....the clip cant be removed unless someone removed it and you have to remove the connector first... the clip itself holds the head light bulbs in the headlight assembly. You would have to remove the clip in order to take them off. They dont just go missing. Hmmm seems like the dealer maybe scamming you. In fact you would need a screw driver or be strong cause they dont come off easy. I would take my car to another dealer, and complain to MBusa....this sounds fishy....if its not the retainer clip it may actually sounds like a defect with the wiring within the headlights that will be covered under warranty...

Call another dealer tell them you need the headlight bulb retainer clip...get the part number if you have too...do not buy a new head light assembly..if in fact if that's all that is missing.

I have changed my bulbs like 5 times since I had the R 2006 ----the clip is a cheap aluminum metal clip that cost about 5 dollars tops at the dealer...I bought two cause I wanted to replace the older ones. Be careful they easy bend.

IMO the head light assembly had some major design and quality flaws/defects:

1. The retainer clips are a poor quality and overtime allow for vibrations that will loosen the clip to the assembly body.

2. If you have to change the bulbs its very difficult cause of the 90 degree angle the lights are positioned inside the assembly.

3. Over time a film will develop inside the clear lenses...in my 2006 I have a film thats has overtime started to reduce the ability of the headlight to illuminate the road...its a safety issue.

4. The headlight assembly clear plastic cover are susceptible to micro cracks..which I have noticed in my R. Overtime it will get worst...

Please be careful about dealers they know that you have limited knowledge concerning your vehicle and will take advantage of you to make money...MB dealer make there money on parts and labor (in NYC 140 an hour for labor) not selling the vehicles themselves that's a fact for all car dealers...

Did you actually buy spare retainer clips at the dealer?

I called 2 dealers in my city, both of them couldn't even find the clips on the parts images they use. One of the parts guy actually spent 20 minutes with me on the phone looking through all sorts of documents, etc trying to get something and then just gave up.

He actually said, "It does seem absolutely ludicrous to buy an entire light assembly for a small clip....but I wouldn't put it past MB."

It is very promising if you were able to acquire spare clips at the dealer. Did you buy them using a part number? If so, do you have the part number for the clips?

Thanks.

I will bump this after 9 years.

I am in the same situation although mines is a W211 2008 E350. I just bought it and found out the previous owner (or the mechanic he/she was going to) was messing with the driver's side xenon headlight. The retainer is missing and hence the light does not stay in place. How and where do I buy this retainer clip from? Please help.
