Hi I'm a new, Iam a MB W140 S350 1995 260k Km owner from France And yes the 6 cyl 3.5 liter Turbo diesel has let me down. This Engine after a repair of the headgasket was completely ruined and now for the time being replaced with a OM603 3 liter turbo diesel.
My question is that I would like to replace the 603 engine with the 24 valve 606 TURBO diesel BUT am I correct in thinking that with the TURBO version I will also have to install some fancy electronics for the fuel pump?. Is there any way I can replace the 603 with the Turbo 606 with exactly the same fuel system as I have now?
Maybe replacing the 603 with the NON turbo 606 is a solution as I hear it has a traditional fuel system? ( No extra electronics required ) Will yhis NON turbo 606 engine be powerfull enough? (I am not looking for speed just comfortable long distance travelling)

Hope somebody out there can help me as I am very happy with the rest of the car just the unrelaiable engine that bothers me.

Graham.

At 260K the 3.5 doesnt owe you anything as they fail much sooner, but what about getting another 3.5? with low milage...that would save you all the hassle of conversion and the lack of HP of the 3 liter. BUt yeh iam not familiar with 606 and we dont have that many diesel members here....but hopefuly someone will be able to answer your question

im surprised the engine didnt fail sooner. The 3.5's are known for bending rods sadly.

As for your question, the OM606 has a computer controlled injection pump. Its not mechanical like the one on the 603. Your best bet would be to get a OM603 3.0 the non rod-bender and just take the turbo from the 3.5 and put it on the 3.0

That way youll gain some HP and youll have a uber reliable OM603! It will be a direct fit with your transmission as well.

Hi.
Do you mean the naturally aspirated 3.0diesel engine with 111hp from a w124 e-class?And does the 3.5td turbo manifold fit directly on it?
Our 350td engine also failed and ruined the crank so now im trying to find some info on possible engine swaps(also cant find a new crank since its a pretty rare engine).Otherwise have to sell it for spares.
Sorry if my english is lil rusty.

I am not all familiar with MB diesel engine prefixes, but I know a Belgian guy here switched his 3.5 liter (when it failed) from his W140 to a used E 300 TurboDiesel engine from a W210 (1999 model year) that had a severe rear-end collision (but the engine was intact).

The tech guy did very little, as far as I understand, adjustments and the new engine works perfectly.

Hi,
Thanks, this makes me more confident that it must be pĂ´ssible to get rid of that terrible 3.5 liter engine.
Any chance of getting some more information on what your Belgian friend did? Or maybe a contact address. I speak also Dutch/Flemmish so maybe that might help.

Regards Graham.

Everybody thank yopu for your advice. My previous Merc was a 250Diesel from 1988 that I used 15years with 680K km and never left me standing. I traded for the W140 So I gues i'm a bit spoilt hoping to get the same kind of reliability.

Install the OM603.971 injection pump on the OM606 turbo engine. You also have to change the oil pan as mentioned and also the oil filter stand too, but otherwise I believe it works.

I have some notes somewhere about it, I'll look for them.

The turbo OM603 3.0L engine will not provide sufficient power and neither will the OM606 non-turbo engine, which would be worse is anyone's guess.
