E500 oil change - 8 liters vs 8 quarts capacity

The 2005 E500 owners manual indicates that the engine oil capacity is 7.5 liters or 8 US quarts. I drained exactly 8 liters of oil from the engine and I am wondering if the manual has a misprint in it. Does anyone know the correct oil capacity for the W211 E500?

-------------------
I decided to change my oil at 6300 miles tonight. I know the subject of oil change frequencies and extraction versus draining have been discussed plenty of times on various benzworld.org forums. But I thought I would share my experience anyway.

This was the first time I changed the oil on this car so I took the opportunity to check out a few things. I started by confirming that the oil check on the dashboard indicated that the oil level was correct. Then I drove the car until it was at normal operating temperature (3 - 4 miles).

I drove the car up a pair of wheel ramps in order to remove the middle plastic panel which covers the oil drain plug. While the car was raised I loosened the oil drain plug and then snugged it back up. I drove the car back down to a level position.

I removed the oil filter using the special MB tool.

I used a Mityvac (Part Number: 07300) to extract the oil from the dipstick tube at the front of the engine (passenger side). The dipstick tube has a small red cap on it but does not have a dipstick. On other cars I have snaked a 1/4" plastic tube (supplied with the Mityvac) down the dipstick to extract the oil. This time I used the largest diameter tube supplied with the Mityvac, approximately 5/16". Instead of snaking the tube down the dipstick tube, I used one of the supplied rubber stoppers (with hole) as a transition piece between the outer diameter of the plastic tube and the inner diameter of the dipstick tube. The plastic tube was inserted approximately one inch into the dipstick tube. The model 07300 requires an air compressor to create the vacuum in the extractor. I powered up the air compressor and held both ends of the tube in place as a precaution. I did not want to end up with oil all over the engine compartment and driveway.

It took less than 5 minutes to remove nearly 8 liters of oil (according to the Mityvac gauge on the side of the container). With the car still level on the ground, I removed the oil drain plug and collected the last 150ml or so in a small metal pan. I added this oil to the oil in the Mityvac in order to measure the total oil drained from the engine. Exactly 8 liters.

I changed the drain plug gasket and reinstalled the oil drain plug. I changed the oil filter (and o-rings) and reinstalled the oil filter. I filled the engine with 8 US quarts, drove the car back onto the wheel ramps and reinstalled the plastic shield below the engine.

The in-dash oil check indicates that the oil level is correct. But, I would still like to confirm whether the oil capactiy for the E500 is 8 liters or 8 US quarts.

I have a 2003 E320 and the owner's manual, which covers the E500 as well for that year, has the same info your manual has -- 8 USqts/7.5 L for the E500.

Here's an extract from a pdf file that a MB tech posted on another forum:

Since the V8 engine is from the 113 family, yours should be listed there witht the obvious 8 L of oil! That forum is hosted by Bentley repair manuals and is under the MB technical discussions -- check out the W211 section.

It appears that MB has quality control issues spread throughout the company.

Good luck.

I took a look at the E500 oil change pdf. There are three groupings of 113 engines. The first group and third group have an 8.0 liter capacity and the second group has a 7.5 liter capacity. The engine designation on the data card supplied with my car is 113 969. Unfortunately, this does not match the nine suffixes in group 1, the five suffixes in group 2, or the two suffixes in group 3. Other sections of this document refer to chassis numbers 129, 202, 208, 210, 209, 220, and 230 in addition to the W211. Since this document covers such a wide range of vehicles and presumably does not include the 2005 E500 engine suffix, I would not be surprised if there were a few mistakes in this document.

The engine numbers in group 2 with the 7.5 liter capacity are 944, 980, 981, 984, and 986.

At his point I don't know whether the correct value for my E500 4matic is 7.5 liters as indicated in the owners manual, or 8 liters determined empirically from measuring the amount of oil drained. I will stop in at my dealer and get their spin on this subject. It seems reasonable that the E500 4matic could have a slightly different oil capacity than the standard sedan. Fortunately, the oil capacity on MB engines is sufficiently high that a .5 liter variance is within the acceptable tolerance.

BTW, the site you referenced does have quite a bit of interesting technical info. I plan to explore it further.

That extract is from the pdf for the 2003 E320. There is also a post for the 2003 E500 which should be OK for you. Check out the forum at http://www.bentleypublishers.com. The poster's name you want is "kaluluka".

Good luck

Checking E500 oil level with SLK350 dip stick

Just out of curiousity I tried checking the oil in my E500 using the dipstick from my SLK350. This seems to have promise. I refilled it with 8 quarts of Mobil1 0w-40. The SLK350 dipstick indicates that the oil level is right at the maximum. It's been about 1200 miles since I changed oil in the E500. So, I will reserve judgement for this measurement technique until I refill the engine with a known quantity of oil. The O-ring at the top of the SLK350 dip stick is a bit undersized, So I don't think this dipstick cold be left in place while the engine is running.

Is it possible that MB uses a standard length dipstick for all of its engines?

When I use the hidden menu to check the oil on the dash it reads anywhere from 7.1 to 7.3 quarts. I have a feeling that the service oil level display is mislabeled quarts instead of liters.

oil dipsticks on eBay

There are at least three sellers of MB oil dipsticks on eBay. I think I got the only "0721" model available today. I paid $39.00, but, if you search for completed auctions of "mercedes oil dipstick" you will find several that have sold for the $30 to $39 price range.

I will report back on the quality of the product when I receive it in a few days.

Oil dipstick tool

I got the $39 dipstick this week. It's actually a tool rather than a dipstick meant to be left in the engine. It's much longer than the SLK350 dipstick. It's exactly the same tool that the service manager showed me at the dealership.

I stopped by the MB dealer to find out what the correct oil level is for the 113.969 engine. I was told that they could check my oil level electronically, then use the dipstick to empirically determine the correct level in mm. The correct level on the chart above is 148mm to 150mm. My 113.969 engine currently measures 120mm on this tool while the oil level according to the hidden screen is 7.6 quarts. I suspect the dashboard scale is really liters. It could be that I have not been able to push the dipstick in until it actually bottoms out. It really seems odd that my engine is reading 30mm lower than the 113.967 engine variant in the table pictured above.

Does anyone have access to the software tool shown in benzboyz's post above to get the factory specified oil level in mm for the 113.969 engine? I would also be interested in the correct level for the SLK350 model 272 engine.

When I do the next oil change, I plan to take measurements with this dipstick as I refill the crankcase. I will update this thread with the details in a couple of months.

Modified dipstick tool

I posted the approach that I used to modify the dipstick tool for use in my E500 and/or SLK350 on the R171 forum.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1220109&posts=15&fid=27#M1570875

The next time I do an oil change on the E500 I will report the corresponding level per my modified dipstick with 6, 7, and 8 quarts of oil. This dipstick seems to work better in the E500 than in the SLK350.

2nd oil change in 2005 E500 4-matic

I changed oil again at 12747 miles today. I removed just over 8 liters of oil according to the scale on the Mityvac fluid evacuator. According to the dash display I had 7.5 quarts before the oil change. This is about a quart less than the actual amount removed. I no longer trust the dash display oil level reading. After refilling the engine, the dash display read 7.8 quarts which is about 0.7 quarts less than what I had just added.

The first time I changed oil at 6300 miles I refilled with 8 quarts as specified in the owners manual. When I checked the oil level a few thousand miles after the oil change, the level was reported as 1 quart low. I added 1/2 quart since that was all that was needed to bring the amount up to 8 liters. I suspect that the 8.0 quart capacity specification in the owners manual should either be 8.0 liters or 8.5 quarts.

I am satisfied that I am not consuming any oil in this E500.

Using the "0721" oil dipstick I took the following readings when I refilled the engine.

95mm - 6 quarts
105mm - 7 quarts
115mm - 8 quarts
120mm - 8.5 quarts or 8.0 liters.

I reset the FSS counter and now I am good to go for the next 6500 miles.

According to the MB WIS manual the oil capacity for the E500 4matic with the 113.969 engine is 8.0 liters. The owners manual indicates 8.0 quarts which seems to be incorrect. Also, the WIS manual verifies that the oil level as measured with the 120 589 07 21 00 tool is 120mm. This is exactly the level I get after changing oil and adding 8.0 liters of new oil. The minimum level above the bottom of the oil pan is 98mm which corresponds to 6.0 liters.

Cheers all!

I know its an old thread, however, has anyone ever found a direct fitting, accurate sized and actual "stay in" oil dipstick for these W211 E500?

This 2004 E500 4matic is new to me, never thought I'd miss the dipstick, but I do! I know the oil level is checked in dash, but for my personal comfort, I want to see the evidence of those 8 Liters of "golden liquid" on the dipstick!

Regards,
D
