I noticed when I ran my VIN on that Russian decoding site it listed a number for the dealer the car was sold from, in my case 705. Is there a way to find out what dealer that corresponds with? I'd be curious to know where my car came from originally.

Once you are on friendly terms with your favorite Mercedes Benz dealer parts guy or service writer, ask them fo a printed copy of the "MB NET" or as it is also called the "Dealer Master Inquiry".

It is private and not meant for the customers to see, but is full of cool information about your car, the build date, list of all equipment, the original selling dealer, and a list of any warranty claims, with date, mileage, code for what the problem was, and which dealer the car was taken to for the warranty issue.

Everything in it is by code, so ask them to translate the codes.

In the USA, (where these are available), all the DEALER codes are actually FOUR digits not three:

ie,

5758 = Calstar MB, Glendale Calif.

5756 = Beverly Hills Ltd MB, Beverly Hills Calif

5632 = European Motors MB, San Frrancisco Calif

5614 = RAB MB, San Rafael Calif

Often seen in the "Retail Code" column on the VMI sheet.

They can get it off their dealer computer instantly, translate all codes.

Most won't get it for you and claim the document is "proprietary" but all it takes is one friendly person inside the dealer in Parts or Service.

If you are interested in history another cool document is the Factory build sheet, from the MB historical archives in Stuttgart, which is a very complete listing of the car's history from the day it was built, down to all equipment.

Be sure and ask for it in ENGLISH, though, and send a photocopy of the title along with the VIN# in your POLITE letter, which can be in English.

A 3-4 page document will arrive in about a month, it takes time but they DO respond to all requests.

What are you talking, there is none, what makes you think there is one

The Russian one can be found in the stickies, at the top of this site, and shows up in posts frequently.. but it is free, and so, you get what you pay for, and it is oftentimes full of mistakes, take it only as a suggestion...

Cascade- Thanks for the info, I had no idea so much was available, that kind of information would be very interesting. The closest dealer to me is about 45min away and I've yet to get over there but when I tackle the timing chain and get the parts, etc I'll see what I can do. I assume this be the contact info for obtaining a build sheet? Something like that would be great to have in hand.

I used the Russian VIN decoder and while it was accurate on some data, it did not fully reflect what I saw on my car. Somewhere along the line I realized that it provided the correct dealer number (547) and location (Luxembourg) where the first owner had bought the car. With google I found only one dealer and they were still in business. A polite email or so later they sent me the "DatenKarte," which I take to mean the dealer info sheet, given how rapid was the response. It is completely accurate and clarified some obscure questions for me (i.e. heavy duty shocks).

Will nevertheless write Stuttgart for the "build sheet" just for the record. In fact since the dealer may have access to Stuttgart's records direct, that is what they might have sent. We'll see. Meanwhile, tracking down this info and parts and a community of advice are some of the reasons why it is a fun thing to have a car like this, as well as the car being a great drive and still elegant to boot. Cheers.
