Check oil level cold or warm?

Hi, I alway check engine oil level after each oil change when engine is cold and I also check regularly in the morning when car has been sitting overnight. I noticed my 07 convertible oil level drops below half of the min/max mark, that's more than 1qt oil after 2000 miles driving. I got a check engine oil level message before so I know it's burning oil. Is this normal for most of CLKs? Many people check oil level in the early morning, but I've also seen other experts recommend bringing engine to operation temperature then shut off, wait 5-10 min to let oil return to oil pan then check the correct level. Which method is correct for CLKs? I saw lower level when engine is warm and higher when sitting overnight.

The second method you describe is the correct way. ie ,,10 mins after stop at running temp ,,on level ground .
Some usage is normal ,,but there is quite a margin from full to minimum , personally I don't have to top up between changes at 6,000 km or 3,600 mile intervals.
I use 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra,,,never gets below freezing where I am. Usually more like 80 degrees F.

Check that you don't have a leaking or bad crankcase breather/oil separator , which I hear is fairly common on the M272,M273.

I changed oil recently and had not noticed any leaks at the bottom. However, I did notice slight leak on the right side (passenger side) a few weeks ago but nothing dripping down yet. It could die to the loosen oil filling cap above it or something else.
I added 1 qt oil this morning and the oil level is right at the max line. Will keep watching it.
