Youtuber (eric the car guy) just had a video on cleaning his own.....spoiler alert: didnt work.

He removed them from the car, cleaned it, reinstalled and still have the code. You might get lucky and they pass a readiness test after a bottle of berryman's, etc. but they're most likely toast

 

The standard way to do this is to replace the catalyst, which means cutting them open, inserting the new catalyst inside, and then welding them back together. This is how MB themselves do it when they sell remanufactured catalytic converters (learned this on the S600 when I got new cats for it).

 

I tried to clean them using Xyleen which is found in all catalytic converter cleaning liquids out there. It didn't really work and I just poked the cat out

Yes acetone /lacquer thinner is the best solution to actually run through the fuel system - but not to remove the catalytic converter and soak in it

Any knowledgeable shop will cut it open, remove the matrix, install a replacement and re-weld it.

 

Waitasec...are people actually seriously suggesting to put lacquer thinner or acetone in the gas tank and run it through the engine?

 

yes it works trust me i did it and it worked cleans the whole system out you tube it you can also try this take off the o2 sensors bank 1 on both sides put in seafoam and carb cleaner and let it sit over nite clean o2 sensor and put it back and run car just my 2 cent have a good nite all

 

Cats are a wear item. Same way you cannot rejuvenate an O2 sensor.

 

I appreciate the possibility, but I shudder at the prospect of putting regular in my tank. If you listen closely, you can hear a distant chorus of engineers screaming "NEIIIIIIIN!" every time that happens.

I've been driving quite a few Mercedes for many years with Regular gasoline, which is fine as long as you are driving at sea level at speed limit. Mountain driving, buy high test gas, or always high test in my SL550.

 

Try a couple of treatments of CataClean. I own a '05 S55 (W220) that threw the codes over 8,000 miles ago and I haven't seen it since. Figure 30 bucks a can.

 

He probably can’t get cataclean in his part of the world

Guys i find the solutuin for passing emition test, just disconnect engine manifold breather pipe and block for temprary.. after the emition test fix it back... i did

I'd actually go onto the highway and cruise a long in 3rd gear for a bit

 

I added two cans of Cataclean to my S55 AMG's fuel tank. One on 11/3/22 and one on 11/11/22. Car had approx. 135k miles when the second can was added. Here we are, 22 months and 10K miles later with no reappearance of the CEL. Total cost of the Cataclean was $64.58 or $0.0065 per mile. Worth a shot?
