I wish I had seen this thread a few months ago. I purchased a 2013 GLK 250 BlueTec 4Matic for my father. It was our 8th MB and first MB diesel since our 1986 300 TD. Six months prior, I purchased a CPO VW SportWagen TDI. My father and I had high hopes for our return to "clean" diesels. We were one of the first US customers to take delivery of the GLK 250 and were proud to be driving an MB Clean Diesel.
In August 2013 the Check Engine Light came on. The dealer checked it out and reported the Oxygen Sensor had gone bad. This same Check Engine Light issue happened at 6k, 9k, 20k, 27k, 40k, and 43k. Each time the oxygen sensor was either replaced, adjusted, or the harness was replaced. At 46k, the HPFP blew. The two MB dealerships in our area both attempted to fix the issues, but they kept coming back. They ran fuel tests, they conducted studies for the engineers in Germany, they assured us the issues would be fixed, they were not. Our service tech at both dealers kept telling us that MB Corporate and the engineers from Germany would be reviewing the issues and providing a fix. The fix never came. The check engine light kept coming back on.
After speaking with my salesman, he encouraged me to talk to MBUSA to file a complaint. After numerous phone calls and letters to MBUSA and visits to my salesman and the dealership General Manager, the best offer I got for my $53k lemon was $21.5k as a trade and a one time $5k credit on a NEW MB only. 30 months old with 46k miles and a loss of $30k. The loss of value because of our high miles was on us, but the loss of value on a car because of the repeated Check Engine Light should have been on MB.
I was, and still am, very disappointed by the build quality of the BlueTec engine and MB's willingness to support the car. Clearly there was a huge problem with my BlueTec Lemon and the GLK should have been repurchased. We found dealing with MBUSA to be atrocious. They withheld direct answers and our repated attempts to resolve this issue amicably. We have been loyal MB customers for over 33 years and spoke highly of the brand for all this time. Our 1986 560 SL still runs great and is the pride of the garage.
Before anyone calls me on having sour grapes, let me say that we have had many Benzes and intended to keep this car for 10+ years. Mind you, the build quality of the GLK otherwise was very good, except for the engine. We took very good care of our GLK, like the rest of our MBs. I washed it weekly, took it in for service only at the dealers, and put in quality diesel from reputable sellers. Our service tech kept telling us that there was an "unusually high amount of carbon build up upon our engine". And off the record, that we would be advised to get out of this car. Funny right?
I called 1-800-Lemon-Law and spoke extensively & reluctantly about filing a claim against MB for this lemon. The answer we got was that MBUSA would litigate every aspect of the claim and would drag out the case for as long as possible. Which I was told could take at least 12 to 24 months!
My dad is a high mileage driver and we had hoped to drive this car for ten years and to 200k miles. I tried for nearly six months to do the right thing with our MB. Last week I traded in the GLK for an Audi Q3.
Your Mileage May Vary, but sadly I doubt if I will ever buy another Mercedes ever again.
p.s. If anyone needs any accessories for their GLK - please PM me. I have some great items for sale and will happily make a deal for a forum member.
