the fan clutch is shot in my 98 e320 wagon. The fan spins easy with almost no resistance. I got a new one and a fan wrench but I cant figure how to hold the pulley from moving the belt just slips. Can I hold it with a strap wrench? Or is there some other method?

Is the old fan spinning freely with the engine above 100C ?
I had to remove the clutch because of pump failure lately and in my case the allen head bolt took over 100 ft-lb to break loose.
After breaking 2 wrenches trying to do it on the engine, I removed the pump with the clutch on (pretty hard) and did the job with big wrenches on the concrete slab.
Strap wrench can give you like 40 ft-lb. Hopefully that might be enough for you. What wrench do you have? Mostly they hold the bolts on the pulley.

I just changed out the water pump on my 98 e320 and ended up using the larger of the two wrenches in the fan clutch wrench set you can borrow from Autozone. it was sized such that it would slip over the four allen head bolts and grab them enough to loosen the fan clutch nut with the 36 mm. It worked for me.

I had initially made my own holder out of simpson tie strap I had laying around by drilling holes and using my 4 in grinder to shape the edge. Unfortunately the strap was not quite thick enough to withstand the force and bent too much to work properly. However, if you find a strap thick enough, making your own would work if you don't have access to the proper tools.

I had a clutch with big hex on my Ford. After spending 2 hr trying to hold the pulley with different belts and straps, I went on the net and saw on youtube a trick with using air chisel on the corner of big hex to loose up the thread.
Once I connected the air chisel, the clutch was loosen up in 3 seconds.
