I have another work related story. about 8 years ago we had a young man from the High School Vocational department working for us. He was working on scrubbing prepping the front of the building for paint. I went outside to check on the group and the young man was on his cell phone. I walked up to him and said hey. He raised his hand and index finger to signal me to wait a minute. Holy crap did my blood pressure hit the roof. I yanked his phone out of his hand an snapped it in two. Was I pissed. He proceeded to tell me I was going to pay for his phone. I told him we were even because I am sure he was on it other time when we were paying him to work. His father worked for us so when I went inside I told him what happened and he actually said good for you.
I smashed another persons phone in a punch press that they were sitting at while they were texting. I have ZERO tolerance for that.
Another thing that bugs this old person is people on phone while you are eating. If I even thought about getting up to answer a land line while the family was eating I would have been in deep doo doo. Why bother to go out to dinner with someone if you are going to be on a phone?
We spend so little time with our families as it is. It seems the only time spent together is eating. Why bother to get married or have kids. My wife and I are trying to figure out how to handle a lot of these very things when our son gets older. We have discussed how much time he will be allowed to watch Television, how much time he spends on the computer (for fun), Cell phone rules... How do you do this without breaking his spirit or making him a target for other kids? How do find the balance?
When he was born I said to the Doctor that he wasn't done and he looked at me with question and said what do you mean and I replied you forgot to pull the manual out.
I want our son to go outside and play not have carpal tunnel at 10 years old from video games. I think computers, smart phones and the Web can be addictive. (as I sit here typing on this when I should be doing something productive.) Dam hipocrite.

I hear you- smart phones can be great tools, but they
are a slippery slope.
I have a friend who is a bartender at a restaurant-
Great food , with a small bar at the back- maybe 10
Spots....
Anyway, he told me that his job has totally changed-
Not too long ago, people would come in, have a beer or
Something, talk to him, talk to the person on either side,
Unwind a little and go home.
Now days, he tells me that almost 100% of the people
That come in order and then it is snouts down into their
Phones- semi-zombies staring into little screens- he told
Me it is depressing and the interaction with his customers
Has all but disappeared, and he doesn't see it changing
Much.... I was in there eating the other night, not at the
Bar, and I took a look- YEP- every single person at the
Bar was fixated on their phone....and there didn't appear
To be any chatter or unwinding going on....it is a fairly
High end place.
The phenomenon has infected the Film Shoots I work on-
At any time, there might be 12-20
People standing and "screening" while on set- not my
Group though- we are too busy, fortunately.
I was in the Unimog on the freeway and looked down
Into the window of an LA City Fire Dept Ambulance-
Doing about 50-55 mph in traffic, and the driver was
Texting away on his phone- at least he wouldn't have to
Go far for medical supplies when he wrecks it.
What can't wait ?
I think they require a certain amount of discipline
To keep them in their place- and I try to keep it out of
My hand, in my bag, or the other room...

we are sooo off topic here, but I'll add my 5 cents too.
At work we opened up another network to allow everybody to use their device if they want to. Same applies to dial in from home (I don't require most people being in the office or work certain hours); But if you do use your own device you have way more security limitations than if you use company devices.
But people using a phone to call or text in a meeting, on the manufacturing floor, or any lab (ESD), is still a very big nono.
In private life I always want to run people off the road that are talking or texting and put everybody else at risk. Same applies to people talking on phone in a restaurant thats above the level of Denny's.
one day I might get arrested for assault.

I thought I would toss this out there - I have three girls ages 2, 4, and 6. They play a bit of computer, mostly avoid the phone and tv. Lots of dolls, construction, and artwork though along with all the messes. Once they're a little older I plan on letting them use computers as much as they want, as long as they're productive and not just using it as a fancy telephone/gossip machine. I want them to be a producer, not a consumer.

I've been heavily involved with computers since I was about 8 years old, and I haven't developed carpal tunnel yet. I do however stay multi-disciplinary and I think that's the key to making sure there's a balance.

I built an altar 8800 back in the day and have been using computers since 1975-76. Have dabbled in Cobol, Fortran, Pascal and basic. Expert at none. I guess I should have been more specific as to say do not want them wasting away in front of a box doing non productive things in stead of "for fun".

Wonder if we should move this to another thread

Legit update. I picked up the Mog chassis from the welder. Wow not what I expected. Oil canned on headboard. Bed is warped. Beautiful bed edges distorted. I am really bummed. Tomorrow I will analyze and maybe come up with a plan of attack. I have the machines to straighten stuff but due to the complexity and size of the assembly I might chase things if I don't do them in the right order. Probably use hydraulic rams and what ever I can push against. I am very disappointed.
I would really take a bath if I started over. I need a beer.

One shop came by today and he said that there isn't any place to clamp to begin with. He also said if it was "z'ed" that was one thing but this thing isn't. He also said when the corners get lifted where is the material going to go?
I knew that I was going to have to do some cutting and welding. Or should I say who ever was going to try to straighten it

Had my morning Pepsi and was pondering thermal stress relieving. Anyone have a big oven at home? Not so funny thing, went to an auction last year and they had an oven with rail tracks going into it. Thought what would I do with that? Well...

Brian,
How hot does it need to get? I know the place near me that does powder coating has a oven big enough to fit the box in. But I think they only heat the thing up to 400ÂşF for powder coating. Might be able to go higher. So that might be an option for you.

This stuff is amazing. The old pipe-fitter superintendent I worked for back when I was fresh out of school, could, to my amazement, bend a 12" diameter schedule 40 stainless steel pipe on a 40 foot radius with nothing more than a wet handful of rags and an oxy/acetylene torch. Flat curve too, if you know what I mean. Amazing stuff. He'd do it again and again just to show folks like me how much we did not know.
