Another tire question. I want to put 235/85 R16 on a G500, but it appears that the tire is to tall. Does anyone know if this size tire will work using standard suspension. The tires are approximately 32 inches tall. Also, when changing rim size and tire size that exceeds stock sizes, does one need to modify the suspension? I ask this, primarily, because the owners manual recommends having MB adjust and correct any differences made by tire size change. Thanks. Cheers--Kevin

235/85R16 are on average 2475 mm in circumfrence - translates to 31.02"
The stock 265/60R18 is 2360 mm - 29.58"

That said, the 235/85R16 will fit without any modifications on a G500.

Have your dealer put the numbers into the onboard computer and all will be fine.

Generally it is the width of the tire that causes problems on the G. The 235 is obviously a pretty narrow tire and, like Harald said, will fit with no problems.

The issue you may run into is with the traction control and stability programs. They depend on the tires size for processing data related to those functions. I am not so sure it will be as easy as rolling into the dealer and having them update the tire size. In fact, I would be a little surprised to see any MBUSA dealer alter those settings. Has anyone in the US been successful getting the settings changed?

I am posting a list I got from the Mbenz shop and a comparison list that one of the members gave me.
I found the 265X70x16 to be too wide. I think I would narrow down a size or 2.
For some reason the pictures did not post, I'll try again.[:(!]

Too Wide...

If you could see my wheels and tires on the G, you could see what I mean. The tires over come the G. meaning that what I see is too wide a tire for the 7.5 inch rim. I am having trouble with the outside edges wearing more than the center of the tires. If I inflate them to the necessary pressure, I get a lot of ESP problems. The Michlens are not my pick either. You should have been there when I jacked the G up to change the 18's to put on the 16's. With the 16 pumped up to 42 pounds, I had to jack the G up another inch to get them on. The tire dealer said they were the same size. IMHO, I'd go for the BF Goodrich "MudandTerrain A/T" but smaller in width.
I tried to repost the pics, but the forum is not taking them.

Well, I will be using the same rims next week and will be placing 265/70/16 BFG A/T but I will run them at 32/34 and not any higher. I have to really recommend this to you. I have had no ESP problems whatsoever when I ran any tire this low. This is a cold pressure and I checked after running at 75 mph for 3 hours in 88 degree weather. I was only at 34/35 at this speed and temp. I will let you know. You did not have anything rubbing, did you???

I have to agree that 42 psi is way too high. Hard to imagine that they wear on the edges first with that much pressure.

It isn't the wheels either. I run 285/75-16's on the same wheels at 25psi and I have no issues with the edges wearing first. The ESP is another thing altogether[xx(]

The pressure when set at 32/34 on my G still brings up ESP problems. Some do and Some don't. It is a good thing I bought mine preowned, cause they would have another one to take back if I had bought it new.
They took a perfectly good Gwagen adn turned it into an electronic nightmare.
I hope you do not have any ESP problems when you change your tires.

235-85-16

Absolutely NO problem.
That tire size in in the electronic memory, it can be activated from the MB Service, and all settings ( ABS,ESP,ETS, transmission shifting points, speed, acceleration ... ) are 100% then.

265-70-16

ALL G320 and G270 are delivered with that tire size and ALL G500/G55 ( except USA ) have that tire size as an alternative in the car papers ( with the 7,5x16 rim ).

when someone is having a "Problem", what is possible [:D], then it has nothing to do with that size.

ESP Problems and driving habits....

Harald,
You have to see it to believe it.....
The ESP light comes on just about any way the G is driven. The mechanic that was trying to fix my problems asked me when I noticed the light flashing.
I told him I changed lanes in a slight right hand turn and the ESP took the acclerator off and slowed the G, Speed... 40MPH.
I then told him making a right turn clover leaf at a moderate speed would activate it also.
He later informed me that any slow motion in a right hand turn would send the ESP reeling. I did not know this and was surprised. He really checked out the G good. Of course I had the 18s on when he did his check.
I now run my 16s again at 32#s rear and 34#s front.
To He!! with that ESP! They can't fix it. I have an ESP button on the dash that disables it under 40MPH, so I just push it and go on.
Mbenz has screwed their loyal buyers with this stupid over kill of electronics. Even they can solve their nightmares.

MB or local tire shop

Before I put new rims and tires on the G500, I was curious if I should use the MB dealership or the local tire shop. The nearest MB dealership is over 100 miles. I assume that a simple rim and tire change is something the locals can do. Any comments.
Cheers-Kevin

i think some are just more active than others, i know mine blinks all the time, even when the gas is not on. Comming down my mom and dad drive way at about 30 mph it will bling going thought the long left hand trun.

they say on a X5 you can unplug something in the brake system and it bypasses all the electronics. They told me i could try this but i havent yet.

why not just run a 265-60-16 and not worry about it, it will be the same size as the other tire would it.

That problem is very rare.
Rare, because the tire size 265-70-16 and 265-60-18 are identical.
That means, the electronic does not "know" what kind of tire you are using, both use the same data field.

Possible, that your tire has very soft side walls, the ESP is able to measure the movement of the side wall in corners ...

Unplugging....

Kerr, if you figure out what to unplug, be sure to post it immediately.
As for soft walls, both sets do it regardless of the pressure. I might agree that a soft wall could present a problem. but 40#s in the 16s did it too.
Sooner or later there may be a fix for this and I'll be go to go.

May the Gwagen Gods smile on you Harald....

Harald, The local Mbenz shop guys opened an engineering WIS and the USA guys were supposedly looking into it. It is probably in file 13 somewhere though. [:D][:D][:D] Good LUCK!

i would think a simple way would be to send a singnal to the computer telling it the center diff was locked, but then you would have that ABS NO WORKING and all that stuff on the monitor.

Ill call my friend tonight and see what it is they unhook on bmw's he is the tech for bmw. ill see if he knows any tricks for the MB.

Guys,

My Audi had an undocumented ability to allow you to connect a laptop through a special adapter and software to make mnay changes and read diagnostic tables, and even get live readouts of anything from RPM to boost pressure to speed.

Does such a thing exist for Mercedes?
