I have a new (4 months old) E 450 sedan. On three separate occasions in the last few months it refused to start. Dashboard lit up as usual, but engine would not turn over. After waiting ten or fifteen minutes it started as usual. I’ve brought it to dealer twice. They upgraded software, but could not find a reason for the problem. During one episode I tried to start it remotely. I received a message stating “vehicle cannot be started due to a technical problem. Try again in a few minutes”. It seems to me to be related to software updates. It happens about once a month. Dealer is puzzled and says they’ve not seen it before. Has anyone had this experience, or do I have a lemon?

Dealer just diagnosed the problem from examining fault codes. It seems to be the now-common problem of the faulty 48 volt battery needing replacement. I’ve read about this battery issue in several forums. My E450 is only four months old with 3100 miles. This is worrisome for the future. I’m glad it’s leased, not purchased.

That is disappointing! Sorry to hear.
we have a 2023 build of an E450 AT that is due end of December, and I was hoping that this was a problem affecting mainly the 2021 models and solved by replacing the (expensive) 48 V battery.
it is disappointing to hear that is is affecting the 2022 and, who knows…2023?…as well.
I am trying to assess this as I may not accept the car if this is an ongoing problem. We take frequent 200 mile trips to our beach house in Oregon, and the closest MB dealer should this occur would require a 200 mile tow on a flatbed.
Trying to replace our rock solid 2001 E320 wagon with 165,000 miles, and I need a reliable wagon.
Dealing with run flats vs. tire replacements and no good place to keep a spare and jack are yet another concern.

I have a 2022 E450 with not only the same starting issue but now I have had the car shutdown twice while driving. After 3 trips to the dealer the only solution they have offered is software updates which have not solved the problem. The car has 9000 miles on it and as far as I’m concerned it is a dangerous car to drive. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be would be appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue with my 2021 E200. Been back to the dealer for a year with no joy in finding the fault yet. Software has been upgraded, new battery, new motherboard of sorts, new key batteries, but to date no resolution. Am pulling my hair out! Car has not even done 30K kms. Reside in South Africa so such an unreliable car cannot be used at night. Am now awaiting feedback from Germany but not holding my breath as have lost faith in Merc - sadly

I have a 2020 E450. While it hasn't failed during driving, I do have a fairly frequent startup electronics crash. Push the button, nothing happens except the display says I've gone 999 miles and such. Wait a second, try again, no problem. There's clearly some software issue involved, system crashing and restarting. Given how many processors and how much software now runs cars, not totally surprising, but pretty scary.
