Hello Everyone... Here is my long-winded story to date on purchasing a new 2007 M-B ML63 AMG back in 2007 and why I still have it now in 2013 with just over 75,500 miles.

As an automobile enthusiast, I always want to drive an automobile that makes me happy. Happy to look at it, happy to drive it and enjoying the entire experience of driving it and its ownership, regardless of whether it is my daily driver or some other vehicle that is only driven occasionally. For me, the most important actual and subjective variables for my vehicles, independent of Manufacturer, are:

1. Safety features/design
2. Attractive aesthetics
3. Fun driving experience
4. Decent (if not good) gas mileage.
5. Powerful (meaning, fast acceleration, for fun and safety)

Why did I choose the ML63 AMG?
My selection criteria can be subjectively ranked in the order of importance as follows:

1. Fast - The desire for fast, exhilarating speed, primarily neck-wrenching, grin-inducing acceleration. (Faster than the other high-end SAV Porsche Cayenne Turbo at the time and prior to the release of the BMW X5M)
2. Uniqueness - Compared to the other SUV/SAV's on the road in your respective areas. (you don't see that many MB ML63 AMG's around, now do you.....)
3. Cargo Capacity - Able to accommodate 4 people and their stuff (well, we have to rationalize it somehow to the family and neighbors....)
4. Towing Capacity - Ability to tow things, trailers, boats, wave runners, etc. (best looking and most capable SUV/SAV hauler on the road!)
5. Mercedes-Benz reputation, - Including quality, prestige, and the fact that it is not a Jeep!
6. Prior/Current M-B Ownership - Having owned a Mercedes-Benz 190SL since 1974 has provided me with plenty of experience with M-B Dealers and M-B clubs and enthusiasts.
7. Safety - M-B has a proven track record in their design of vehicles for safety. The M-B W164 had the highest safety rating from a number of Transportation/Highway Associations, so it would be hard to do better than the ML in that category.

In addition, I need an all-wheel drive vehicle for the approx. 2 weeks of the year we have to deal with snow covered roads. Plus, while it is only my wife and myself, we need the cargo space and height for all of our "stuff" for our road trip vacations, i.e. golf clubs, her clothes, cooler, etc. That is my justification for getting a SUV/SAV/whatever... But I wanted one that looks great and has the handling and ride as muck like a car as possible, along with the performance of the AMG tuning that I had become spoiled with, coming out of a 2004 M-B E55 AMG.
Did I consider the E63 AMG wagon? Yes, for a few minutes at least, but I am "old school" and it is still a station wagon, with all of the memories and stigma from my childhood, although it is probably the hottest wagon available....

So my ML63 ownership story officially begins in June 2007 when I took delivery of a new 2007 ML63 AMG that I had built-to-suit, ordered through a local MB Dealer in NJ, specified with my preferred silver exterior color and black nappa leather interior and all factory options available at that time, except for Distronic, but did include a special order AMG illuminated front door sills. In 2008 I had an Escort Passport 9500ci stealth radar detector / laser detector/diffuser system custom installed, which has paid for itself a couple of times over...

When I first leased my ML63 AMG back in 2007 I drove it as my daily driver, using it to commute to and from NYC. I averaged approx. 15.5 mpg for these trips... not great gas mileage but what was advertised when I originally selected the vehicle, so not a surprise. This vehicle requires the use of premium gasoline to run properly and therefore I am now on a first-name basis with several gasoline station attendants in my town.

The W164, and the ML63 in particular, works wonderfully as a very fast, comfortable, and fun long distance cruiser, capable of accommodating and carting all of our luggage and "stuff" on our long weekend excursions and vacation road trips. It really is only on the long trips in this country on interstate highways where the ML63's incredible acceleration capability is able to be best used in the most appropriate way, such as on entrance ramps and for lane change passing, etc. I rationalize the ML's poor gas mileage as just one more vacation cost and realize and appreciate that it is also part of the cost of putting a silly smile on my face whenever I am driving it....

Tires
I purchased four winter performance tires: 295/40 R20 Pirelli Scorpion ICE & SNOW tires that I have mounted on the OEM rims in early Dec. each year and then have them removed and replaced at the end of the following April with my four (OEM) Continental Cross Contact UHP 295/40 ZR 20 high performance summer tires. This routine has worked well for me living and driving in the northeast US. I have been please with the performance and wear of both types and brands of tires. Keep in mind that you cannot put a 19”rim on the ML63 since they will not clear the large brake rotors so I have to use 20” rims all year round.

End of Lease - What to do?
During the last several months of my lease in the spring of 2010 I started the investigation of what my next vehicle would be. I have been very happy with my W164 and certainly realize that no mass-produced automobile will be perfect or without some issues. How it ultimately performs will be influenced on variable factors including how and where you drive it, how often you properly service it and where and how you store it.

After much deliberation whether to get a new similar vehicle such as the new ML63, or competing vehicles such as the BMW X5M and Porsche Cayenne Turbo, I decided that the most cost effective solution was to buy my ML63 from Mercedes-Benz Financial at the end of the lease since it only had about 37,000 miles on it. I realized that since my '07 ML63 was loaded, I had everything I really needed in that vehicle other than the latest electronic communication/entertainment gadgetry. I determined that if I purchased my vehicle off of lease it would cost me about half the cost of buying/leasing a new one, ($50,000 vs. $100,000). I was able to negotiate with MBF what I thought was an acceptable deal to buy it for approx. $2,000 below my lease's stated residual value of the vehicle. As an enthusiast, I always baby my vehicles and had the MB Dealer always perform all of the necessary regular and preventive maintenance and servicing so the vehicle was and remains in great shape. I have always had the engine oil and filter changed at approx. 7,000 miles. I even had my M-B Dealer upgrade the rear tail lights to the later generation LED's, which look really good.

Servicing
In early 2011, at the 50,000 mile milestone, I had my M-B Dealer perform all of the M-B recommended servicing items noted below that were recommended to be performed and 50,000 miles, as well as those recommended to be performed at 60,000 miles, as a precaution, since I was buying the vehicle off of my original lease. (Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Services: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12 & 20). I also had all brake pads and rotors replaced on all four wheels, replaced both batteries, tire rotation, 4-wheel alignment, replace rusting lug bolts, (a common problem on all current M-B vehicles), and replace all 3 wiper blades. The total cost for all of this was $3,998.

In the summer of 2012, at the 70,000 mile mark, I had my M-B Dealer do the following recommended service on the vehicle:
1. Perform Mobil One synthetic oil and filter change
2. Perform a 4-Wheel Alignment after they remove my Winter Snow Tires and reinstall and balance my Summer Performance tires on the OEM rims
3. Flush & refill brake fluid (M-B Service 4)
4. Replace A.C. combination filter (M-B Service 5)
5. Replace air cleaner insert (M-B Service 8)
5. Change transmission oil & filter (M-B Service 20)

I paid off my 3-yr. bank car loan in Feb. 2013 and now own the vehicle outright, with a Kelly Blue Book value of around $30,000 - $32,000. In August 2013, I reached the 75,500mile mark, now will be averaging approx. 10,000 miles per year. I plan to hold onto this ML63 for another couple of years until I reach 100,000 miles and will then sell it.

Issues
For the most part my ML63 has been very reliable over the past six years. The issues that I have experienced since new have all been relatively minor, (except for number 6 and 8 below), and all were all corrected by my M-B Dealer and were covered under the original MBUSA vehicle warranty or my M-B Extended Limited Warranty, (except for number 8), and included the following:

1. Air Conditioner Compressor leak (lost refrigerant). AC Compressor was replaced in 2008.
2. Both metal running board tops were oxidizing and were replaced in 2008.
3. Two OEM 20” AMG alloy wheels experienced growing corrosion around the hubs due to clear coat failure. Both wheels replaced in 2009
4. One of the LED video screens in the rear of the passenger side head rest failed and was replaced with a new unit in 2008.
5. Rear tail gate closing issue due to faulty striker and bumpers were repaired in 2009.
6. Replace failed engine serpentine drive belt and isled pulley in 2010.
7. Replace a loose sunroof contact switch in 2013.
8. The ETC module, (the automatic transmission's computer brain), connected to the valve body / conductor plate inside the transmission had malfunctioned and had to be replaced, at a cost for parts & labor of just under $1,000 in Aug. 2013. (Note: my previously purchased MBUSA Extended Limited Warranty had expired on May 30, 2013 so I had to pay this cost out-of-pocket).

Extended Warranty

The important fact to keep in mind is that all of today's AMG vehicles are very expensive to repair, especially if there is any issue involving the engine or transmission, (see #8 above….). The cost of replacing the entire 6.3 engine alone has a MSRP of over $65,000! So in April 2011, nearing the end of the original M-B mfgrs warranty, I decided to purchase a Mercedes-Benz Extended Limited Warranty (ELW) for the ML63. The ELW can be purchased from any M-B Dealer and is available in a number of different mileage/months combinations at different costs. I elected to go with an ELW for an additional two years and/or 25,000 miles (up to 75,000 miles on the vehicle). The ELW was not cheap at $4,171 (which includes 7% NJ sales tax), but there is no deductible and I view it as an additional "insurance" cost that gives me important peace of mind. Repair or replacement of just one key covered component on this vehicle could easily total this amount. So if you have or buy a ML63 that is still within the original mfgrs. warranty I strongly suggest that you seriously consider exploring getting a M-B ELW that works for your budget and time frame in order to have the peace of mind of having that ELW coverage, just in case....

I believe that these vehicles, if property maintained, will last for quite some time and provide many satisfying miles of spirited driving. This strategy allows me to continue my enjoyable ownership and driving experience of my ML63 for a couple more years before I make a change. My current daily driver is a new, (as of June 2013), 2014 BMW M6 coupe, which also puts a wicked smile on my face when I get in it and start its engine, even though the the ML63’s wonderful naturally aspirated AMG engine’s baritone rumble sounds better to me….

Well, my 2007 ML63 AMG now has 170,000 miles on it. I bought it from a dealer mor than 10 years ago for $25K. There were issues, but nothing that was not easily taken care of. The engine and transmission have been working flawlessly and it has been running the same way ever since I bought it. What amazes me is the A/C, it has been trouble free!. Guess that driving at low RPM was easy on the A/C compressor. Gas mileage not that bad either. If you are not driving at Autobahn speeds mid grade fuel does the job and should you somehow screw up, the engine goes into limp mode. All you have to do is stop and restart, and everything is back to normal. I really love the M156 engine with 503 Hp naturally aspirated, it's always ready to go. Once I passed a slow driving pick-up truck doing 45 mph. It took off like a scalded cat, my wife screamed and held on the seat handles as we passed the old farmer. :))) The advertised mileage, 12 and 16 still holds true. That's for town and highway at 80 mph. At a steady 60 mph, after the engine is hot, you still can get an honest 20 mpg fuel consumption. Too bad, the suspension was tuned for safe travel at 150 mph. (It supposedly even pulled a 20 foot camper at 140 mph.) But around town, over roads with repairs and potholes, it definitely is no Citroen ID19, two of which I owned in the 1960s. Now that was something to brag about. :)

Nice report AVB-AMG, much appreciated. The ML63 is more durable than I expected.

I had a 06 ML350 and got rid of it at just over 50K miles. It had a few more issues in 50K miles than your ML63 at 75K miles, I wasn't impressed. Not something I wanted to own when CPO warranty expired. (Didn't know about the balance shaft issue at that time)

Some of the warranty repairs included: rear tail light assembly, power steering pump, air bag sensor

Open issues at time of trade (for Lexus CPO car which I still have): climate control fan speed problem (sporadic), idle problem (sporadic), stereo volume control problem (sporadic), suspension creaking (when cold), worn shocks (at well under 50K miles), rear hatch latch problem, steering wheel looked like crap and had sharp edges, to name a few.

Your experience is very helpful, since I am begining mine. Just purchased a used 2011 ML63 with 14,890 milles in the odometer. Fourth MB in my ownership record. As a starting point of my ownership I am having my MB master mechanic change all fluids, including steering and differentials, change battery, tires, all filters, and replace a number of broken or scratched interior parts. Any advice regarding how to achieve the most trouble free experience and as much longevity as possible? I will be keeping the vehicle until approx. 62,500 milles or another four years. I am also an enthusiast who likes to keep his cars as perfect as possible.

Best,

Miguel

My long term ownership was a very short term relationship. It was kind of like marrying the girl of your dreams only to find out she was a psycho b!+ch. My 2006 started out rocky, noticing an odd shift occurrence in the tranny. The individual who was upside down and in trouble with the CPO, sold it to me without informing me that the valve body and control module was replaced two days before I drove it which leads me to believe it was still learning shift points. After checking it out again, I handed him a check receipt for $23,600, his payoff at MB financial that he thought I'd trust him to pay, instead sending it to them myself. We drove it home in an ice storm from Knoxville, TN, Feb. 2010. On the way home, ABS and ETS lights came on. Dealer in Huntsville said it was likely due to ice build up. Never had the light again. But . . .

Took it to Kentucky in March, 2010. Experienced a roaring in front end on the way back, going through Nashville. Knew what it was and MB of Huntsville confirmed: Front Differential needed replacing. Good for my CPO warranty. Saved me 5,200 bucks. Sunroof motor, hatch open, close motor and hatch cylinder, power seat motor all had to be replaced. This was all BEFORE June of 2010, when I got smart and traded it off, getting $23,900 toward a new F150 which I still have. I had heard about the balance shaft issue and was not sticking with it. Thank God and Ford it's now gone.

Some Suggestions.....

MIguel:

I think you have the right approach to ensure as much as possible a trouble-free ownership period for the next 47,000+ miles on your ML63.
If I were you, I would do the following:

1. Price out the options and seriously consider purchasing from MBUSA their Limited Extended Warranty for your vehicle. It is expensive but on a used, expensive-to-repair AMG vehicle that you plan to keep for the add'l. mileage you have indicated, I think if would be excellent insurance.

2. Follow the service sequence on all other items, as recommended by MBUSA for the ML63 AMG. It has essentially worked for me.....

3. Change the engine oil and filter every 6,000 - 7,000 miles. Also, good insurance.

4. Have your Master M-B Mechanic also change the transmission fluid. This is one component that seems to have been an issue with a number of ML63 AMG owner's, including myself during this past summer.

5. The LED tail lights on the right side tend to have individual LED burn out. It was a seal problem that was addressed via a MB Service Bulletin. If that happens to you, it should be covered under the original M-B Warranty or later on under a purchased Extended Limited M-B Warranty.

6. Since I change my tires from summer performance to winter tires in Nov. and March, I have a 4-wheel alignment performed each time that is done, which always helps the quality and smoothness of the ride. I also notice a marked improvement in handling and stopping distance with new tires versus tires whose tread is nearing the warning belt.

7. At every check up I ask the mechanic to inspect the condition of the serpentine belt to ensure it is ok. If it shows signs of wear then I will have it replaced. I do not want to have it break again on me as it did several years ago.

I hope this list helps....

Thanks AVB-AMG. Good advice. The transmision fluid will be changed as well as all other fluids and filters, wheel alingment and balace will be checked too. Service will be handled subsequently by the book. Oil & filter change will take place each 15,000 kms (approx. 7,000 mi). As I am in Mexico City I cannot get an MBUSA extended guaranty, but I will find out if there is one available from MB Mexico. I already made a note of having the pulley checked evry time the vehicle goes into the shop, as well as the condition and cleanliness of all drains. I will check the rear right tail light. How do you go about cleaning and preserving the leather? Do you know exactly what is leather and should be treated as such and what not?

Best regards,

Miguel

Leather Care & Misc. Car Care Products

Thanks AVB-AMG. Good advice. How do you go about cleaning and preserving the leather? Do you know exactly what is leather and should be treated as such and what not?
Best regards,
Miguel
Miguell:

On the ML63 the leather is napa leather and is used on the seats, dash, center console grab bars and door panels.

There are quite a few products on the market that you can use to clean, condition and preserve the napa leather on your ML63. I have used two products over the years. LEXOL and Leatherique with successful results.
Here is a link to a web site that I use to spend more money than I should on various car cleaning products, with a focus on leather care products. What I like about this vendor's web site is the level of detail they provide on each product.

Leather Care - Clean, condition & protect leather upholstery with premium, pH-balanced products by Pinnacle, Wolfgang, Lexol, Leatherique, Connolly,

Also, here is a link to another M-B blog that goes into great detail on the proper use of the two different Leatherique products:

Thanks again AVB-AMG! Great information. In this new world of information in the digital age, everything seems more confusing sometimes; in these times, if the dealer or manufacturer say "leather interior" you don't know anymore which parts are leather or if the "leather" is in fact dead cow skin! My leather interior is genuine leather, correct? Is the steering wheel also genuine leather? It is rather hard to obtain good products locally; I have three unopened bottles of Lexol cleaner and three of conditioner; they were bought 13 years ago. Do you think they might be used? I also have fresh Zymol cleaner and conditioner; what do you think of this product? Your help and knowledge are much appreciated.

Best regards,

Miguel

Miguel:

Yes, the 2007 ML63 AMG has standard leather interior and the type of leather is Napa leather.
From Wikipedia, here is the definition of Napa Leather:
"Nappa leather or Napa leather is a full-grain leather, typically dyed, made from unsplit kid-, lamb- or sheep-skin by tanning with salts of chromium or aluminium sulfate, and noted for softness and durability. It is often used in high-quality leather products such as high-end furniture and vehicles".

Yes, the standard AMG steering wheel on the 2007 ML63 AMG is wrapped in Napa leather.

I would not trust any cleaner or preservative product that is 13 years old due to age causing chemical break down, exposure to extreme temperatures and humidity. I would toss it out and purchase new products.

Zymol products have a good reputation. Check them out and the reviews for them on the We Are Car Care -- Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detailing Supplies, Car Buffers & Car Accessories Store web site and others.

Good luck....

'09 M-B ML63 AMG

Hi AVB-AMG;
Great post, thank you!
Question, I am considering buying a '09 MB ML63 AMG from a friend who is an aficionado and takes meticulous care of his other high-end cars.
Car looks and runs great, he has all maintenance records for MB dealer preformed service and new brakes and rotors all around are less than nine months old. Car has +/- 100K miles on it, 90%+ on country roads.

I would be most appreciative and grateful for your perspective and thoughts.

Thank you!
New AMG

PS originally fr Princeton/NYC now living in VA! Say hi to NJ for me!

In my short experience with a 2008 ML 63 with 49,000 miles.

I bought the vehicle from a dealer a few hours drive from me (Newport BMW). Drove the car home and made an appt. with MB of North Haven to Install a tow hitch/brake controller and mount 4 Blizzak snows on her. Next day an Airmatic error pops up so I had the dealer check it. They said it was the pump and it had to be replaced so I had them do that while in there. Contacted BMW and they refused to cover even 1% of the Airmatic repair, said "if I drove it back to them they would have fixed it".
One month and 600 mile later I noticed my drivers door handle stopped auto unlock and the button didn't lock the car anymore. Rear door handle works fine for both so for now use that. Two weeks later I start the car to warm up, come out 5 minutes later and it's not running. Crank the starter (which strained a bit), hear a bang and smell burnt rubber. The pulley on the PS pump had ripped off (bearing had seized). requiring a new PS pump and belt. Can't say i'm thrilled so far....

Update, I bought a 2008 ML63 in 2016 with 70,000 miles on it. I use it for my daily commute between work and home which is Orlando to Titusville Florida. that trip 5 days a week is about 60 miles each way to my particular home, the SUV now has over 215,000 miles on it and still pulls strong though I have noted a high squeak from the pulleys at idle. I suspect its been always there but more pronounced at idle. I have changed the tires at least every 2 years on average. it seems to really love its tires! no matter what brand I get or that I rotate them regularly. oil changes are done like religion. though between oil changes within the last year or so it the dash ' get oil next fill up comes on at the 2 week mark and I have to now put about half a quart in it. I guess it getting old. upon start up now if left overnight especially, there is the cam rattle which quickly goes away at the car starts up. brakes seem to be fine I last changed them about 2 years ago. I am still surprised considering the amount of driving that is done. since owning the car I did change out the transmission though I think the mechanic I was using was not honest and may have stolen the transmission for himself. as he had a similar car on blocks, guess what it needed? anyway I moved away from him a long time ago and mysteriously so did the monthly "issues" the SUV developed while in his care. one persistent problem with it has been the suspension. especially the leveling, causing the truck to rise and fall as I am driving it (normal?) but always when parking it and leaving it, it expels air, I have gotten so used to it, that when others not used to it hear it, I just say its farting or passing gas, which it does a lot! upon shutting off. other than that, its still been a reliable vehicle though I know that the day is coming that it will give up the ghost on the highway between cities and strand me. I don't know what a engine does when its tired, at 250,000 miles? 300,000? more? less? anyone that has experienced an engine failure care to share what I will eventually experience? the SUV has been good to me so I guess I cannot claim that I didn't get my money's worth, but I know I will still be upset when it does happen. I guess I can aways sell it and make it someone else's problem but for me at least that would not be ethical. anyway, I would love to hear anyone else's experiences with this for me at least marvelous car that I have so enjoyed and so far, am continuing to enjoy.

Been eyeing on a 2013 ML63 AMG that just came through the dealer with only 14200miles on it. Previous owner rarely drives it and perhaps only weekends. Yes, I am aware the car is coming to 10 years of age, however, it's exterior looks mint with a TopCar Inferno Bodykit installed & 22" ADV1 wheels. I've test-drive the car and tested out the electronics, and the car ran perfectly as it should. The only cons I've noticed is that the interior of the car has an obvious ageing such as the Leather Seats crack, Wooden Trim Dash and Side door has a few wear and tear scratch marks (which can be replaced). As I'm still deciding on this purchase. I'm looking for some advise as to what to look into or spot on internally such as the engine, suspension, coolant, etc..I'm fairly new to the AMG performance package as I've never owned one before. I worry more on the reliability in engine that may arise which may be costly. Any advise would help. Thanks

At face value it sounds like a clean car. My only concern is vehicles that have been modified. Inherently if you have your car/SUV serviced by MB dealerships, or some independent repair shops they may have a harder time fixing things especially if they are custom, I am talking mostly about engine components. I would take the SUV to a Authorized dealership and have them do a points inspection. This is a thorough inspection of the vehicle and a liar of things wrong , need attention, or anything else. Some things like "missing tire valve screw, or paint chips, and scratches, are very minor and are indicative of age, but at least you will know because of the list they will give you.
