Hi BenzWorld forum members! After wanting a 221 for some time, I’ve settled on and purchased a very nice 2006 S500L sedan. Neat as a pin, just beautiful.

Being an early model, there is no AUX or MMI external pins or cables. I am looking to upgrade the head unit to a newer generation one. I have spoken to Mercedes and their authorised electrical audio people can activate the AUX function on the radio for me.

The company (Seicane) I wish to buy a new head unit for the car from is asking if the car is equipped with AUX or not. I cannot see a physical AUX port, but I have been advised that the function can be used. The site says that if there is no AUX port, I will need to buy a fiber optic filter to use with installation. Being the 500, it has option 810 with the Harmon Kardon sound system. My audio installer seems to think we will need this due to the premium sound system, but the staff at Seicane claim that, provided the car has AUX, I will not.

I am going around in circles here and am hoping someone can stop the circle for me. I don’t want to spend unnecessary money on a fiber optic cable if I do not need it, but it will be a disaster come installation day if my audio guy puts it in and it doesn’t work. Even if, technically, the fibre optic cable is not needed due to AUX being activated, are there any other advantages to having one? Will it make installation easier? Will the sound on the original HK speakers be better?

Any advice, suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Justin

There are three parts to this.

1. The car need to think it has AUX
2. The Cable to connect the COMAND unit (DVD player) to the glovebox must be present
3. The cable from the glovebox to your mobile

To install an Android device (I did and it transformed my driving experience!), you would need the first two.

It seems like your dealer can program the car to enable AUX, so you just need the cabling from the back of the COMAND unit. The android displays have a pigtail connector for the AUX connector, which you would connect to the COMAND unit cable.

If you search the web for 'Mercedes w221 aux cable' or something like it, you should see a bunch of options. You need one that has connectors for the back of the COMAND unit. If there is an NTG version mentioned, your car has "NTG 3".
