hi there,
after 2 decades of working on early model MB stuff, i seem to have found myself faced with what i consider to be a new car - a 1998 W202.
the previous owner purchased it new, and drove it for years until one day, there was some sort of battery failure, causing the car to fail to proceed right in the middle of nowhere.
he parked the car under a tree at his farm, and purchased an identical car. years later, i've ended up with it.
so. i put a battery in it. windows and so forth work. the doors lock/unlock, and the ignition (the fandangled three button type) unlocks allowing it to turn. the cluster lights up. the gear selector locks/unlocks appropriately, but the steering column lock is permanently unlocked.
it will not crank. turning the ignition on will cause the fuel shut off solenoids to click on, then off. if one attempts to crank, nothing happens at the starter, and there is no click at the fuel solenoids. i bridged the starter and got it to turn. gave it a little squirt of something in the intake and it fired.
so, i'm thinking there's an immobiliser problem. or... can that stupidly complex replacement for the old style OVP cause a no crank condition? faulty electronic key unit? something else?
i understand the function of the fuel shut off solenoids, but what about that loom that goes into the back of the IP? i mean to say, for the purpose of assessing the car, could i apply voltage to the solenoids to get it started and expect it to perform normally? which pins are required for this?
many thanks. this is a brave new world compared to W111-124!
