My brake light started to flicker and fluid was low. So I documented my first MB brake job here. Apologies as the first half of this 22 minute video is a bit shaky due to a *.VOB file write error.

Some online brake videos say easy peasy entry level for just changing the pads, but you should install new disks as well. Disk removal is moderate-advanced level on the Benz whereas on most domestic cars it is entry level. On our classic cars new hoses are also a good idea, as is checking and re-greasing wheel bearings. This is an example of using speed bleeders to make it a simple one-man two-minute job per wheel. I have no connections with the maker of speed bleeders, they are just very convenient. Good luck to you if you do this job as the MB blue thread lock compound makes this a high torque challenge.
Here are video contents listed by approximate time in minutes:seconds.
  • 0:20 – Pads only is a simple job
  • 1:18 – Parts list
  • 1:42 – Front brake removal
  • 2:25 – Unbolting the front disc
  • 4:07 – Check and grease front bearings
  • 6:06 – Front hose replacement
  • 9:26 – Speed bleeding front lines
  • 10:47 – Rear brakes
  • 12:19 – Pulling rear disk
  • 15:25 – Rear swaybar link
  • 15:50 – Rear brake assembly
  • 17:20 – Rear hose replacement
  • 18:07 – Speed bleeding rear lines
  • 21:00 – A 200 mile result

give me a brake

Thank you for the feedback it is hard to gauge interest in this brake job; many like me thought it was an easy job but anyone considering unbolting the five thread-locked socket cap screws holding each front disk and yanking a rusty rear disk-drum assembly should take a look here first, so they know what to prepare.

Great video.

I did a complete brake job 7 years ago along with a ton of other stuff. I wasn't in a rush so that if I required additional parts I wasn't going to panic.

As it turns out....I needed new front wheel bearings which took 8 days to get.

So it's good to be prepared with all the parts or have extra waiting time planned.

Waking up this thread of six months ago to share these pics. I put the snow tires on today (still no snow Jan 6) and I am pleased to say the high temperature paint on the disks and on the calipers is going strong after 5,000 miles. There is hardly any rust on any part, notably the plain steel discs. These are Centrix brand that some criticize as foreign steel, but these work great for me. Brake performance remains strong and true.

Hello; I did the rear brakes on my 88 560SL and I am replacing the master cylinder reservoir as well ( so bleeding will wait).
I pulled the reservoir and I have the replacement with the grommets. Problem is the grommets fell apart in my hand and the ones I have are the wrong size. The new large grommets are on order.

My questions is: Do I need to bench bleed the master cylinder now? I have not touched the brake pedal and there is a little fluid in the reservoir inlets where the reservoir was.

The new reservoir is larger than the old one as well. It is a Mercedes part. I had to twist the brake booster hose to the left so it would fit. Found it odd....Stay safe!!

8/16- The car is all together.
I bled the brakes starting from the right rear. I turned the key @ acc position. When I got to the front, there are two bleeders. I had help, someone was pumping.Pump 3 times hold, open bleeder and close when pedal hits the floor. After that was done, there was no pressure on the pedal you can push it straight to the floor, for about 5 to 7 seconds, the pedal pressure would then firm up. I thought I was going to end up with a bad master cylinder.
I continued on with the bleeding. Almost went through a can of fluid 1 liter size....the fluid was nasty that came out!
Took the car for a spin brakes are phenomenal did a little embedding process some firm pressure stops, without coming to a stop !!!!!🤘🍻🍻🍻
Any ideas on why this would happen??
