I'd like to have tint applied to my Estate. Called around and was quoted $275 for 40% Solar Gard Ceramic tint.
Now 40% seems like not much in my eyes, but they said that's the only ceramic they have in stock otherwise I could take carbon.
Whats your take and what are some of you having for tint?

40% should be okay, it's not too dark. Price is competitive. Just make sure the tint is not metallic, because it might interfere with navigation system, etc.

But with tint, you need to find an experienced shop that comes recommended. The quality of the installation is very important.

im not a big fan of chromed or metallic looking tint, but i had 5% put on my car all around except for the windshield (have a 5% strip on top). i like the 5% except when backing up at night with no rearview camera... ive been thinking about going a little darker to 2 1/5% though... 40% is too light (in my preference)

I have 7 windows limo dark tinted for 145 USD. Life time guarantee against bubbling, fading, coming off, scratching and others. He even pulls it off in case I roll up with a fixing ticket. He told me come in, we take it off, you see a cop to sign the paper, come straight back we apply the new one and then you go to the mail box to send the letter to Sacramento.

I can't complain about that!

Its Hard to see backing up at night but its worth it
How true is that :) It's virtually impossible to see out of the windows at night through the rear and side windows if there is no light source outside of the car. But he is true, it's so worth it. It gives the car a nicer look, protects the leather and interior from the sun, gives you some privacy and keeps the car cooler!

In the State of Florida the following applies:

Windshields: Must be safety glass and may not be covered or treated with any material which has the effect of making the windshield
reflective or in any way non-transparent. It must be free of any stickers not required by law.
Side windows: May not be composed of, covered by, or treated with any material which has a highly reflective or mirrored appearance
and reflects more than 35% of the light.

So your 40% is Legal in Florida.
The LOWER the number, the DARKER the Tint.

I have Tint in the Rear Glass, Two Back Doors.

Remember that reflectively is different than light transmission.

In FL, you are allowed by law to have 20% tint on the rear side windows and rear glass screen, and 30% on the the two front windows. You can tint the front windshield down to the the AS1 line in the glass (30%). If you can get your eye doctor to sign off on a special exemption, you are allowed to go darker on the two front windows.

Keep in mind that a lot of tints come in 19% and 28-29%. When applied to the windows, they often equal out to nearly 20% and 30%.

Hm, don't you think that would go a bit too fast if:
a) you have a coated windshield which is a OEM windshield
b) if you have mud on your car's windows?

Sure you can be "forced" to keep your car clean but where is the line of the freedom of cleaning or not cleaning your car and being held responsible by the government about a not so clean car?

well you're supposed to have at least one or two mirrors on the car and visable.. but with too much mud, it would violate that law and one could sue for manslaughter because of the infraction of that law, it being a visual infraction at that.

i'm still wondering if you have a strip of tint at the top of the windshield (past the legal line), could one sue after a fatal car crash that the suspect for manslaughter because of a tint violation? how about a whole windshield that is tinted?

I believe that for the whole windshield you could be charged for manslaughter, but no for a tint strip at the top as long as it doesn't exceed your line of vision.

Well the windshield is different I thing since this is your main outlook. But having the sides tinted I think that should just someones right and freedom to do so.

Again, if an OEM puts some sort of a coating on a windshield, that is most def. approved by law otherwise a multimillion/mulitbillion Dollar/Euro/Yen whatever companies wouldn't do so - period. So if I buy a car and has that coating on do I really have to question the dealer if that is legal? I assume it is legal or it wouldn't be in the lot or in the showcase inside the dealership.

Manufacturers are often exempt from tint regulations because there are so many different stupid laws in every single state. Factory rear tint on say a minivan or a crew cab truck is about 30%+/-. That would be illegal is some states as an aftermarket tint. But since the vehicle was made with the tinted glass, it is exempt. This is the same reason why no manufacture sells vehicles with factory tinted driver/passenger windows and they never tint below the AS1 line on the windscreen.
