Hello;
I went out to my car and tried to open the trunk with a key and found the lock frozen.

Here is how I diyed it.
Remove the two large screws,
Unhook the vacuum line and power wire,
snap off dust cover and pry tab to release lock/latch,
snap off clip and remove arms,
snap out large ring,
pry out clip and cylinder slides out,
disassemble and clean everything,

ALSO, lube this lock as part of service !!!

locks

Beware taking locks apart is easy - putting them back together is not. This turned into quite an epic for me...
I have to laugh as I tried this with my trunk lock years ago (1999 E320 4matic sedan) and I removed the pin tumbler cylinder shell and the tumblers shot everywhere. Though I was able to reassemble and reinstall in the lock in the car the key lock did not work. Not a huge deal because the previous owner had had the cylinder re-keyed and never gave me the correct trunk key anyway (found this out later). I use the trunk release on the fob or in the car now.

Yowold, please describe in clinical fashion what you mean when you say you "trunk does not lock."

in my head, it could mean
i closed the trunk lid down but it does not latch
the trunk lid is closed but I cannot turn the key to the 3 o'clock position
the trunk lid is closed but when I leave and lock the car doors, the trunk can still be opened without the key

so a better description would be helpful

I'm thinking that your description of the symptoms aren't helping much because it is pretty
much based on a locking mechanism which has been altered. I think you may need to
buy one from a junk yard and compare parts, piece by piece. It could be the linkage, the
tumbler, (I'll skip over the PSE pump because you said you bought a replacement...but
that's being presumptuous there, too). If you're lucky, a forum member will have their
trunk locking mechanism disassembled and can try to isolate which part is missing
based on your single photo. All in all...a bit more challenging then your usual trouble-
shoot-by-keyboard

Our 98 E320 also has a trunk lock problem. Actually several problems :(

1. The interior switch is defective (someone probably pulled too hard on it). Not working at present.
2. The remote fob does open the trunk. Currently the only way trunk can be opened.
3. The mechanical key only goes part way in. As a result, it cannot be turned.
4. I have opened the trunk once by just pushing the lock cylinder. But it won't do it again.

The pictures at beginning of this thread are of some use, but the description of how to disassemble and more important , re-assemble kind of skimpy :)

So far, I have taken the lock assembly out of the door and flooded the cylinder with WD-40. That didn't seem to help.

The jobs have built up on this car :(
  • Trunk lock needs repair or replacement
  • Trunk switch on console needs repair or replacement
  • CE light still coming on due to 2ndry air. Need to try and correct that.
  • Multiple small rust spots need repair (two perforations)

I took the car to two shops to see if they could do the rust repairs. One said it would be about C$2900 but he couldn't start on it until November! He does that sort of work. Most shops don't. The second shop said the front fenders needed replacing, maybe rocker on one side etc etc - More than C$6000 and they were not interested in doing it. Suggested I buy my wife a new car!
It was quite a while back, but I had my 85 300D repainted including new front fenders for C$3000 at Maaco! And that was for their best finish :) It was actually a good job. I wish Maaco were still here!

Had another look at the trunk lock today.

Key will not go all the way in. Tried lubricants, jiggling, force. It just stops part way in as shown below:

We had never ever used the key in that lock, so perhaps it is just crudded up. But we have always been able to open the trunk manually by just pushing the button. Works so long as car is unlocked. What I was missing at first, is the the chrome lock cylinder and the black surround both have to move

I noticed that the rubber trim around the lock cylinder was either broken or displaced.

I took the locking mechanism out again. I found that the rubber trim ring was still intact, but was partially dislodged. It sort of fell out! It must have been preventing the lock cylinder from moving in and out.

I cleaned it up and tried to re-install. Tried about 20 times and could not get that trim back in place :( It was clearly too big in diameter. OK, how do I shrink a rubber ring? Freeze it? No, actually Mr Google helped. Rubber actually shrinks if you heat it! Putting it in hot water was recommended, but I used my heat gun. Probably didn't heat it enough but it did go in on second try
Image

Sprayed a little dry lubricant in the trim-cylinder gap for good measure. Trunk now opens easily by pushing the button. No need for the lock or key!

FOB also works, but needed this as a backup.

Next, I need to look at what is wrong with the console switch.

Back to rust repairs :(

Regarding the internal trunk release switch, mine stopped working too. The LED on it lit when the trunk is open, so it was just the mechanical switch part. I considered replacing the LCP (the module with the window buttons, trunk switch and the mirror control is mounted on) as they are / were not expensive. Then I tried to lift the trunk switch to pen with my index finger, at the same time pulling the switch back with the same finger. Amazingly, the trunk opened. Ever since, I have no problem with it. I guess the switch electrical mounting pin(s) has some cracked solder over years of operation, and back movement seemed to fix it, at least for me.

I lube the key holes once a year.

The trunk switch is loose in the console. I need to find out why! I think it broke once before. Maybe some crazy glue needed!
