iPad mini in dash install (DONE)

Installed an iPad Mini 4G in my ML. Required a lot of dremeling, wiring, and patience. I'm still not 100% done but it's at the point where id like to share with the forum. It's rough around the edges and suggestions are appreciated

The way this system I made works is that the iPad is NOT meant to be removed although it can be removed once you remove the wooden trim. It charges and has audio, only charges when key is in position 1 or 2 and of course when it's on. The amp turns on in position 2 of the key and is wired directly to the iPad and the speaker wires are from the stock radio harness (they were cut because I was lazy)

Things left to do
-Add a USB port for extra charging for other devices (the iPad has a dedicated power line from the ACC of the power harness for the radio).
- Bluetooth remote to control volume without touching the iPad
- hide the wires for the amp under drivers side carpet (any instructions for that?)

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

My car was the cheap model which didnt have the Bose, amp, or subwoofer. I think this made the job a lot easier for me as the speaker wires were directly there. I wired a cheapy amp for the time being to the speakers under the drivers seat.

Currently have a 400 watt 2 channel crapstastic amp. It's hiding under the driving seat right now. Planning to hide it under the carpet eventually. How big is that amp and will a normal sized amp fit there?

Here is a photo of some of the nasty drenelimg that was required to fit this sucker in. Like I said, nasty. I mean to clean it up but from the outside its clean and none of this is visible

anyways things i would suggest:
1.) get a bluetooth remote audio receiver if you encounter any issues with noise in the system. (you can run it off 12 volt...i tested it lol)

2.) control the volume via a rotary switch that on your center console. it will be faster to access and quicker to change to the desired volume. i bought an equalizer that has a rotary volume knob in it and have been happy ever since. the install looks clean, the equalizer costs only about $50 and you have the possibility of really fine tweaking your system, even on the go. I often catch myself touching the frequency buttons depending on what music genre i listen to....

nice work so far! keep us updated about your progress... personally would have gone for android because you could have ran an IOIO/arduino board and just controlled your entire car that way haha. but then this wire mess might result:

Did you make a thread about that? If so yours was the inspiration for this project after I saw what was possible using the stick wiring to charge and play audio out of the speaker system.

Did you get any of the above (besides hiding the wires) or any other additions?

Hi CGL!
I added an always on USB port to charge devices, which is very nice, you can leave a device charging overnight somewhere where you don't have power :)
Then I added a volume knob as a replacement for the Bluetooth remote I had planned. Basically the volume knob is a potentiometer between the ipad and the amplifier, and you leave the ipad at full volume and change the volume with that. Right now it's sort of loose under my seat but its MUCH better and safer than fiddling with the iPads on screen volume control. (Obviously) I hid the wires.
Other additions as this setup evolves are
- a 5 channel amplifier (2500. Watts or so it says)
- Bose stock subwoofer under the passenger driver seat (since it didn't have one)
- bass volume knob

The way this amp works and why I picked it is because it allows the 2 RCA plugs to spread audio through all 5 channels without using any Y adapters, which is PERFECT for the ipad.

Yes, but I use apple maps. The navigation on it is better than any garmin I've used recently and integrates with the iPad perfectly
Here's some pics!

I don't have too many good pics for some reason

Hi all, just thought I would update this thread with a link to my front page post on Jalopnik about this project, as it's probably relevant. Thanks!

I haven't got it hooked in because I carry a dedicated code scanner with me at all times that I paid about 100 dollars for haha. I just use that when needed (thankfully not very often)

Hey Mac128, it's been a while since I've logged on here.

I use the "accessibility menu" for lock unlock, but the lock button is also accessible thru the area where the "low range"/"fog light" switches are since, tbh, I never quite finished the job and left those (rarely used) buttons kinda dangling behind the wooden fascia due to the fact that their "clips" had to be eliminated to make the iPad fit. They can be properly affixed, I just never got around to it.

The Home button is fully accessible on the face of the iPad, don't think the idea would've worked too well without physical home button access.

FWIW, this iPad setup is still operating perfectly with what looks like around 4 years of service basing off my original posting here. Highly recommend this upgrade!
