Dan you are a diamond thank you very much for that its brilliant. I have two other questions sorry about this:
How easy is it to remove the door panel as I need to replace the window switches as one of mine has broken. I have the new one ready to install.
And The boot release appears to have a mechanism that sucks the boot closed is this a pneumatic pump that does this?

See "R230 Windows and Adjustments" thread on page 2.

Yes, the PSE unit in the trunk pulls the trunk closed. The trunk latch fails more often than the PSE. I had to replace my trunk latch last summer.

Thank you gentleen for your help and advice it has been very helpful. Now I have another problem and I know you will be thinking what a moron or muppet or such expletives. Anyway here goes I went diving this weekend and accidently left my car key in my pocket. Yep completely knackered doesnt like salt water at all so I called my local Mercedes benz spare parts and they have told me that it will cost in the region of ÂŁ340.00 to replac ebecause it has to be sent to Germany to be reprogrammed. Does anybody know anywhere cheaper that might help me out ÂŁ340.00 seems a bit excessive for a key. Any comments (constructive ones) would be welcome
