560sl Dash Speaker How to replace?

Can the speakers in the dash of an 87 560sl be replaced by just taking off the grill that covers it, or do you have to remove the knee bolster to get to it? I've taken out the screws at the bottom of the grill, but the top of the grill is adhered to the dash. Are all grills adhered or is it just mine. I don't want to peel it off if it's not going to gain me access to the speaker. Does anyone know of any instructions that might be posted somewhere that tells you how to replace the speakers? Any help would be appreciated. I live on Maui and I can't find anyone here who knows who to do this so I'm trying to tackle the job myself.

Once the bottom two screws are removed the top of the grill is held by metal clips. You have to lift the bottom up a little and slide the grill down. The clips are a pain to get re installed. Be careful on your speaker selection. I bought altecs and they were the correct size but the frame on the speaker and the magnets were bigger. I ended up using a die grinder on the metal to open up the hole a little to make the speakers fit. It is not veiwable once everything is installed. Hopefully your speakers wont require this. You should not have to pull any other panels. I did because I replaced the head unit (radio/cd upgrade) at the same time. MAKE sure you check that everything works before you button everything up. I had to take mine back out because of a bad connection. I hope this helps.
By the way it made a huge difference. before I could not hear anything with the top down, now I just crank it up. Good luck

Thanks everyone. After looking at the photos posted, it seems as though someone has tried replacing the speakers in my car before me and must have broken the clips on the speaker cover, because the top of my cover is definately glued back on to the dash. We'll give it our best shot! Thanks again for the info.

You guys clearly haven't experienced the "re-search" phenomenon I have. You search for something, get no results, create a thread to ask the question, realize as you do so that about eleventy hundred people must have asked the same question because it's pretty damn basic, search again, and BAM now you get 8734658097234658097634875628347 results. And you can't delete your thread now.

This is the creation of a type of insanity with which I am already so familiar!
You do something you know ought be correct but it fails. Then, after you recite that "the definition of insanity is doing repeatedly yet expecting a different result", try another time... and then bam! YOU GET THE RESULT you sought in the first place.
Yup, you need a computer for that kind of crazy. Lol

I dunno, Greg. I usually get the result I wanted in the first place by throwing a tool across the garage in frustration, not being able to find the tool I threw, buying a new one, and finding the tool I threw. Doesn't work with 10mm sockets, though.

I’ve got a backup plan called Dave. I try my best to do things, I ask questions and read about 100 posts, more than once, then I watch maybe 10 or so you tube videos, I look up pictures to see how things ought to be, but if I just can’t get it done, I call in Dave. Dave is not a collaborator, he’s more of a hold my beer and GTFO of my way and let me fix this as quick as possible because I’ve got something on the grill type of person. Which is why I only use Dave as a last resort, because my learning is done at that point; speaking to him while he’s doing things isn’t a good idea. But damn if he doesn’t pull my ass out of the fire every time.

Everyone needs a Dave sometimes. Even if he does make you want to strangle him in his sleep.
