Did the serpentine belt and tensioner shock about two months ago on the 1991 300SE and sure enough the tensioner failed last week, loosened up and the belt started slipping and squealing. Jonathan and others suggested doing the tensioner at the same time because it would fail soon but did I listen, oh no....Did the tensioner last night and other than the design being a little wierd, it was an easy job. I did run into a little trouble trying to get the fan clutch off, it flat would not budge, so I worked around it. Got is all done in about 1 1/2 hours and all is well. Was trying to figure out how that tensioner actually works, it must have a spring connection internally that goes bad and lets the outer housing slip from the center and lets the belt loosen up. Donna disect it soon to see exactly what happened. Live and learn right?
