I have a 2002 E-320 4 Matic Wagon. One of the Xenon headlights, the drivers side, is dimmer and a different color (Kind of pink) compared to the passengers side. Is this the bulb? Is this the transfomer?

How can I troubleshoot this? I am familiar with high voltage electrical systems and have appropriate equipment.

Where might the test points be? What voltages should I expect? What is the proccedure to remove and replace the bulb?

Thank You,

Chuck

From what I've read, it's most likely the bulb going south. Replacement intructions might be in your owner's manual. I have Xenons too but I've never looked at the book to check. Good luck.

I just replaced my Xenon bulbs on my 'new' E430, about a month ago. I got a pair of Philips D2R bulbs from an eBay seller.

Pair(2)New OEM D2R Philips HID bulb 85126 German(Osram):eBay Motors (item 290309578476 end time Jan-06-10 14:58:28 PST)

Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of this because there is little room for a camera behind the headlight unit. Here's what I did;

- Access the bulbs from the back of the lighting unit, just like the halogens.
- Unscrew the big black cap
- Remove the connector at the base of the bulb, ~ 1/8 turn to the left, looking at the back of the unit
- Turn the locking ring to the left, it is a little snug so be careful, I felt like I could crush it with my meaty, sausage-fingered hands
- The bulb can then be removed

For replacement it is just the reverse. I used nitrile gloves when installing the new bulbs to avoid contamination of the bulb glass. The only catch is, the bulb has a little notch on its base. It seems that this notch orients the bulb to the reflector, its corresponding lug was at the top of the bulb retainer in both lights. Sometime, when I have the units out, I will try to snap some pics to add to the stickys.

MM, to your point, the procedure is not in the Owner's Manual for the Xenons, it refers you to a qualified tech. I looked it up on the WIS.

Thanks for the information and the link. If I need a new bulb I will certainly buy these and replace both. The key question is, is this condition caused by the bulb or some other (More expensive) component? Anyone else had the "pink eye" syndrome?

Thanks,

Chuck

I've had the "pink eye" syndrome for about two years now. It can be seen when pointed onto a white or light colored wall. When looked at head on they both look the same to me. I don't think there's another component involved but just bulb aging.

I just know as others have posted that is good practice to replace both at the same time.
