Looking to buy a manual transmission that will fit a '82 300SD with little to no modifications.

Best bet would to find a complete gray market euro version with a manual in it, maybe a 280SE. Do some bottom feeding at Goodwill donation auctions, Craigslist, etc. I doubt if any were imported by MB directly. That way you get ALL the bits and pieces that will make it a bolt in installation. Also need to determine if that trans will fit your engine.

But, don't you have to worry about the torque rating of the transmission?

No don't worry Mercedes transmission will handle the torque I have done 3 conversions 2 W123 and 1 W124 never had a problem

What kind of customization is needed for the drive shaft?
