Hi guys,

Well registering my 280slc here is cali isn't as easy as I thought. They sent me a notice this week and said I need to obtain a compliance letter from the manufacturer stating my car meets California emissions. I called them and they said the reason to that notice was that my car was lacking the proper emissions stickers. So I need to find the right stickers and then get my car reinspected before they will finish the registration process and give me my plates.

So if anyone has a parts car or knows where to buy Mercedes emission decals please let me know.

Was this car previously registered in CA? If not, I believe that you will need to find a BAR referee to have the car inspected and emissions tested, then you will get a sticker.

It won't be a simple as finding a sticker reproduction and applying it to the car

I will need to go through this process myself at some point, on a 450 SLC 5.0 that is registered in CA, but has been non-operational for a while, and some idiot in the car's past having scraped the BAR sticker off the door jamb to paint the car a different color. I would like to find a time machine, simply to travel back, find the guy, and throttle him!

I have seen a couple of situations where all stickers got painted over on cars which were EPA/CA approved, which creates a real pain-in-the-ass with downstream registration here in California... One was an so-called perfect out-of-state Ebay car with a repaint, that was purchased by a naive buyer and brought back into California, only to face this same issue when he went for registration..

I got the car smogged and registered. When my local DMV sent the papers up north they saw when I got the car inspected there was no emission sticker indicated at the inspection. That is why they sent me the notice. I called them and told them the car does have an emissions sticker so she just said have the car reinspected and have them fax the papers up north. So a simple fix to this would be slap on a emission sticker and have it inspected again.

No clue on getting your car through CA emissions. Only ones I've ever done though CA have been older than the cut off so no issues there. Just a title/vin verification and all set.

For your decal you MAY have some luck trying the EPC. Looks like section 58, 015 (tools and accessories) has a listing of various stickers and plates. At least for my car. Not sure on yours. Also not sure on what if anything is still available. My guess is probably not many, but either way, worth a shot looking it up and seeing if you can order direct from MB.

As a note, may help to fill in your profile with the year and model of any 107's you have. That way other members can look at your profile by your posts and immediately have the info and perhaps give better informed answers.

Here's what I recommend.

I'm assuming this is what you're talking about correct?

If so, how good are your photoshop skills?

I say, design a new sticker in photoshop that matches what you see there. Include all of the relevant information, match vin, gross vehicle weight, etc.

Up to you if you want, but photoshop in some rives to make the final product a bit more authentic.

Save the image and upload a high res copy to this site. https://www.diginate.com/products/metallic-sticker/

Have them mail you a new emissions sticker.
Slap it on the car.
Get it smogged
????

Profit!

Alternatively: have a machinist stamp in the important info, get a sticker made like the original, and pop rivet it all in.

The compliance letter will have to come from the guy that did the conversion. do you have that information?

Just a word of advice: be careful. BAR stickers have individual registration numbers and if anyone does a check and it doesn't match your car you can be in major trouble if somebody wants to follow-up on a bogus tag. It's called counterfeiting and fraud and they are both felonies.

I have an emissions sticker removed from the upper radiator support of a 1986 560SL. It is plastic or vinyl and was glued on. It says this vehicle conforms with U.S. and State of California regs. It doesn't not have a VIN on it but does reference the 560 engine and year 1986 in fine print. If this is of interest let me know and I'll get you the particulars.
