Hi everyone. Does anyone have any ideas on why I started going through so much oil on my 83 300SD? I do have a small drip drip from the oil drain plug that I need to get on but we're talking a teaspoon per day. I've added 5 quarts in the past 6 weeks. Please do not say the bent rods thing.. I don't want to think about that yet. It doesn't smoke at all (other than the little bit at cold start up) and runs like a dream. Only 121k miles. Could the air filter/oil return have anything to do with it? Its been a busy summer and I'm going to get on this problem this weekend. Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know anything about an oil burner (diesel) but the drain could be needing a new crush washer or seal of what ever type it has (I have a rubber seal on the Yota). I'd check all over for any leaks especially while running. I had a truck a few years back (work) that the seal on the engine dipstick was leaking, mechanic pointed it out to me while idling every 10-15 seconds a drop of oil was being slung towards the back of the engine bay, this was an engine that went from using absolutely no oil to having to top it off every day (barely touching the stick the next day during pre-trip).

Unscrew the oil fill cap and let it rest in it's hole. Start the car and if the cap blows off you have too much blow by. Too much blow by can be a restricted breather system or worn rings. 5 qts in 6 weeks tells us nothing. How many miles in 6 weeks? Freeway or in town? What weight oil?

Not sure how the crankcase breather is plumbed on that year, but, if there's too much suction on it it can draw the oil right out of the crankcase. A Diesel will quietly burn it and you'll never know, it is, after all, an oil burner...

One thing that can often cause too much suction is a plugged air filter.

Also, the turbo seals might be shot, allowing oil into the intake that way.
