Would you buy a completely stripped 71 280se 3.5 for £1000? It's been dry stored for 12 years and is complete except for the seats

Well, which is it, completely stripped or complete, except for seats? Either way, though, for 1,000 euro it's hard to go wrong.

OK, full story. Car was bought by a rich farmer for his girlfriend, she hit something with it and it was left in his shed for over 10 years. During this time his dogs slept in it and destroyed the seats so they are missing. Car was then sold to a mechanic who filled the fender damage and stripped the car for a respray.the engine hasn't been started in 20 years. this was never done and the car was sold to it's current owner who has had it for 12 years. he has realised that with current economic climate and small children that he can't restore it. the parts are boxed but afik nothing is labelled. My heart keeps telling me to buy this

Hi Tommy, buy it only if you are certain that you will not perpetuate the car's doomed fate.

Back in 2006 I began preparing my car for a respray by removing the trim. One thing led to another and the car now sits in my garage looking like your Benz. The first three years I worked on it enthusiastically, then something happened in life and I haven't touched the car for a yrear and half.

John, get cracking on your car.

Tom, the 3.5 has some new parts, the front bumper mount, the front suspension looks like it has many new parts, like the sway bar bushings and shocks. As long as all the small parts are bagged and identified, putting it back together shouldn't be a problem. Attack one area at a time, like one front door, then the other etc. The whole car can seem overwhelming but one small area can be easy.

If it were a coupe I would go for it. Being a sedan, you should look at how much a nice example goes for on the market today and then compare with all what you would need to spend on this one in time work and money before enjoying it. As said above, you only live once. You may better spend that time enjoying driving a nice example right now for less money than go for months (years?) of headaches and the risk of loosing interest and part of what you invested in when you resell the project. Unless you do everything by yourself and that's your pleasure. Then it's a different story.

went to see the w108 and couldn't buy it, it needed both fenders, drivers door, rear screen, seats ant it had been stripped to bare metal and not painted so was covered with rust. The search continues
