Hi guys, I recently bought a 1979 280ce with 133k original miles. I got it for a good price but am wondering if I should keep it and make the repairs it needs. The indy tells me I need a new smog pump, and tie-rods. Also the air conditioner needs to be charged. They came back with 2,200 for everything.

The car is in decent shape, but I'm on the fence on whether to put that amount of money into it.

Any thoughts?

Sorry I don't have any pics....yet.

I dont' know what a smog pump is so I can't comment on that.
I did do an outer tie rod job on my car and it wasn't that difficult. In fact, I counted the number of threads that I screwed in/out so I wouldn't have to take it for an alignment.
As for ac.. go to a place that can put that dye in the freeon to test for leaks. You don't want to recharge it and find out the next day that it isn't working. Or, you can recharge it yourself as well.

Of course it's worth it. Whether you keep it and enjoy it or sell it down the road requires that you fix it. But when you spend 3 or 4 times that much, now we're getting serious!

That air pump is a PITA to find. You can, depending how bad it is internally, get new bearings installed. Here's a thread with internals photos of said pump. OP of that thread named part wrong BTW.

I'm guessing that $2200 is mostly the cost of the air pump. Try matching it up with a late 70's, early 80's GM/Ford/Chrysler, especially Chrysler since your 280 already has a Chrysler servo.

This will get you to the shop for an alignment, but is in NO way a substitute for a proper alignment.
