Most buy back cars have had the problems fixed. You are getting a big discount on the purchase because of the cars previous status but remember that because its title will forever be branded "buy back" the value of the car is reduced as well and this will affect both its resale and insurance value. In effect you are paying less upfront and will get less later when its time to sell it. If the car works well for you its a great bargan since you are getting a really nice E Class for less than the price of a "C" and when you sell it, it will still be worth more than a "C" of the same vintage.

Be very wary. Cars that are "bought back" sometimes have their problems deliberately or otherwise misdescribed.

I had a brand new 2001 Volvo C70 HPT turbo bought back after a nightmare invlving water leaks and squeaks from the dash board the dealer wa never able to fix. The car was returned to a Volvo dealer in San Francisco.

It was evidently trucked back to Volvo HQ in New Jersey, as several months later it was listed on ebay b y a used car dealer in NJ in the same city as Volvo NA HQ whose ebay auction noted that they acquired the car from Volvo NA (It was my VERY SAME car, I recognized the serial number being the same and the picture of the 5k mile service stamp from the SF shop where I brought it, in the booklet) and the Lemon Law buy back description written by Volvo was to the effect of "Car bought back as goodwill, customer complained that car wandered at speed on the highway, could not duplicate the problem"

Absolute lie.

However the ebay buyer paid $24k for a one year old car with 7k on the clock, the car cost me around $39k-$40k when it was new, so maybe he thought it was a bargain. I didn't.

Buyback cars can be cheap, but aside for the lifetime "Lemon Law" title they carry
there is a good reason they sell for cheap. I don't know whether "lemon Law" titles can be "washed" through registration in successive selected states, I hope not.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for responding. I went to my local MB dealer and was able to get the Vehicle Master Inquiry (VMI)

The car has been back to the dealer approximately 18 times from October 2004 - December 2006 for 36 different issues some of them “repeat concerns”

car was originally leased out of CA, retained by the dealer for non payment by the owner, bought back, sold at an auction in GA, and is now being sold by a independent dealer in upstate NY. From looking at the VMI, and comparing it to the VMI for my 2003 E320 which has 69200 miles, they look almost the same;
except for the fact that my car hasn’t been back to the dealer that often. Then again my E320 doesn’t have a lot of the above mentioned options.

Well, I’ll discuss it with my new found friend (MB Tech) offer $32000 and see what happens

While almost any title can be washed; todays tech makes it harder to conceal. CarFax is one reason - almost any time the car title changes hands, as well as mundane things such as when it has the oil changed by a service center they get that info along with the mileage; which is all tied to the VIN. I do not know if a buy back is noted on the title report; but having the car retitled to the manufacturer in less than a year or so would be a red flag.

CarFax buys a lot of information about how we service and register our cars; which they then repackage and resell.

Since it is not being sold from an authorized MBUSA retailer, I would be skeptical about this vehicle. Since the non MB dealer cannot perform warranty work, you cannot go back to them and get things fixed. An MB dealer may have a different story when it comes time to fix the car.

The price is too good to be true. I would also paint meter this car to see if it has had paint work, and look at all the body seams and caulking and see if it has had body work. CARFAX does not always immediately report accidents and therefore you should be vigilant in ensuring you know what the story of this car is.

I suppose if the MB authorized dealer has no issue servicing it, and it has no problem paint or body work, buy it. It will be nearly impossible to sell though. There are so many on the market, that in a few years people looking for an E-Class like that one will have many options besides yours. Even if you price it cheap, it won't be much cheaper than a non branded vehicle.

Some banks will not finance branded cars which will make a future sale to a non-cash buyer difficult also. Best of luck.

What makes you think that car will not be back in the shop again, for more issues/repairs...just because the car is still under warranty...you have the convenience factor to deal with...I had a ML that was in the shop 90 days of the first 180 days I had it...fought with mercedes and they finally swapped it out for a new one ( more options, etc. and let me substitute if on my lease...)

I found an 04 wagon, with very little repairs done to it, with all the recalls and bulletins, with a CPO for under $30K ( this was last october...) I too considered a buy back car from Ebay, but the concerns expressed above were the deciding point against it...There are alot of off lease cars out there...be patient, be willing to travel a little bit and you will find the right car...

Good luck

I just found out that you can't rely on carfax. Two of my cars at home had been rear-ended and it didn't show on carfax. The second car that got rear-ended was over 2 years ago and still nothing. Or better yet, the milage on carfax is still 22 miles when it is actually close to 70K miles although I've taken the car only to dealers to service.

I say... if the accident is your concern, do a paint meter, not carfax. Good luck.

You are correct. It is important to make sure the car is checked by hand and sight as well as a vehicle history report. If the report is clean, this may not mean the car is.

Get the CPO warranty and roll on....
This car would not pass a "certification stopper" because of its lemon law status. Any warranty return, buyback, or warranty voided Mercedes is not eligible for a CPO warranty. The CPO warranty, further, is only available to Mercedes-Benz Certified Mercedes vehicles. This vehicle, if it were eligible, would need to be Certified just to qualify for the CPO warranty.

Hope this helps.

MB Buyback

I have an O3 E500 that was a buyback and after a few initial visits to fix some of the problems that were also stated on the Buyback documentation, I have not had any further problems. For almost 3 years it was entirely problem free and never an issue with getting it serviced at Mercedes.

In fact, if they resell the car, it has to be covered under warranty or they have to note that specifically. So as long as your local MB dealer says the car is covered still, then never an issue.

My warranty expired in January and as of yesterday I had a problem with the suspension, but I think it is a sensor so nothing major. It never came up before so I am not really worried about it. Just the right front dropped down, so a sensor is not working most likely.

If you buy the BUYBACK car, only do so if you plan to keep it for a long time as it will depreciate rather quickly, moreso than normal.

First of all this is not a great deal, you can buy a Brand New 2007 E350 for about $47,000. This vehicle will be 3 years old in a few months, it will be very difficult to get financing and impossible to ever trade in. You can probably find another 05 for the same money that does not carry this stigma.
