i can hardly type this i'm so pissed. driving home, just now, my hood popped up and well, you know the rest! luckily i was watching because someone else was coming from the other direction and i had to steer through the sliver of road that i could still see under the hood and through the broken windshield. the only hint i have of a cause is all the slack in the release, which wasn't there before, also, it looks like the previous owner did a sloppy job of adjusting the hood, i.e. one spring is on the middle peg and the other is on the first, if that makes any sense. also, and this is the most sickening aspect of it all, the hood, in going past its normal, less than upright position, smashed two dents, one into each corner of the cowl, or whatever you call that thing! not a dent in the hood! i figured it would have turned itself inside out but no, only scratched at the corners. the cowl, or whatever, appears to be rather solidly attached to the car though so i don't know what the hell to do about it, how do i get to that screw or pin that connects that piece to the fender? argghhh! These cars seem prone to that. Mine popped up at about 20mph for no apperant reason, it didnt shatter the windshield though, I did have to replace one of the arms though

That happened to me once too. Got some creases on the hood (126 body)Going at less than 30kmh. It just suddenly flips up.. [:(] Luckily the glass didn't break. You can bring it to a shop to see how you can remove that part. Just for advice..

I think this is caused by the hoodlatch lock mechanism giving way or not locking fully. Check that the mechanism is lubed and that the lock pin actually has a strong enough force on the spring to hold the hood down.

My hood springs are set at 2 and 1, if you put them on both 2 and 2 then that will be too much upward force, making the hood pop up even more (assuming the hood latch is the culprit, and it wasn't fixed).

Hood springs set to 1 and 1 are too weak, plus mine for some reason likes to get out of the pegs on the hood hinges so I set them to 2 and 1.

Make sure the hood stops aren't pushing too much on the radiator support, if they do then that increases the chances of the hood popping up (more space between front edge of hood and top edge of headlight).
