My car - WDB129064... sl320 1999
I have a large speaker (woofer?) at the bottom of the doors and a small (tweeter I presume) up by the door handles and also a tiny speaker of some sort on either side of the dash near the windscreen.

Yesterday the right lower speaker cut in and out several times while the upper one continued to work. It doesn't work at all now.

It seems that there is no sound coming from either of the dash speakers but maybe they never worked and i just noticed this when the woofer died- i have a jvc non original head unit since i bought the car and it has not been a problem.

Is there something obvious/common I can check before going to the hassle of removing the door cards (which i had off a few months back and the speaker's cone? looked undamaged and not affected at all by any water ingress) - any idea what the problem is?

Thank you,

Darragh.

If I turn the volume on quickly the sound comes back into the woofer but leaves again, as if it is struggling to be heard. I have a JVC head unit since I own the car which has been fine to date. I checked that it is all connected at the back of the head unit and it is. I might plug another stereo in its place and see if the woofer works with the new stereo.

I found out that my stereo comprises of door woofers/tweeters (and two dash tweeters which don't work). No amp - I found the amp connector socket under the back seat. No bass box. Head unit JVC replaced the original Audio 20 I think.

I got two replacement Woofers from Bose. Order restored to adequet sound. The cutting in and out was a bad woofer. I understand that condensation and/or water gets in via the speaker wiring.

Bose numbers are door woofer - 133619 and door tweeter 133620

The original owner of my car didn't opt for the full audio which would have cost extra.

I should have concluded this post before now. The anticipation and excitement must have been terrible...

Seriously, thanks for asking and for the advice,
Darragh

My passenger door speakers work intermittently. When I open the door just a tad, they work. I suspect a broken wire in the cable between body and door. Fun and games trying to find it.

Brace yourself for this amazing story....When I had my door card off I noticed the outer tape that gathers the cable harness which comes through to the door interior had through years of friction and movement torn a bit - so I taped the wires up again.
