I read an evaluation of a 2001 SL500 on mercedesheritage.com and was surprised to find the following:

“... we’re aware of failing crankshaft pulleys on many of the 2000 and later V-6 and V-8 cars. If left unchecked the wobbling pulley will slowly machine a nice groove in the front engine cover eventually requiring its replacement, a very expensive repair... “

I had never heard about this before. Is this a common problem on our cars?

William,
The specific part you're referring to is the harmonic balancer. On some model years involving the 113 engine, the balancer was found to defective and part of a recall by MB. An advance search on 'harmonic balancer' should bring up the previous discussions of this recall.

I think the author is not talking about the balancer. Here is the rest of the article:

“…We check all the pulleys and tensioners on these cars and after checking our SL, requested MBZ to replace most of these items. So there are now a few more entries in this cars warranty data bank…”

I think the recall was USA only as my UK car had the problem when I bought it. The car had been dealer maintained before my ownership. Thankfully the Indy I had the car serviced at in London spotted it before any damage was done. Well worth a check if you are not in the States

266 euro plus 85 for the labour.....

at least i avoided bigger damages
