Hello,
I have been searching this site and found alot of great information and have learned a ton. However I cannot find the specifics for my car. I have a 1996 Mercedes e320 with the factory sound system. I would like to replace the head unit but before I was hoping to find-
1. Intallation guide showing how to get the stereo out without breaking the trim.

2. Wiring diagram so I know what is there before I get started. I dont think its a bose system. Does the head unit connect directly to the speakers or is there an amplifier? Is there a harness available? How many factory speakers are there and what is there impedence?

I would appreciate any help as the head unit has the code error and has a broken volume control so I just want to replace it with a standard aftermarket unit with its own built in amplifier.

Thanks, any ideas or info appreciated

Is it a 124 or a 210 model (I think a 1996 model can be either one)? In any case the wiring should be pretty standard with an ISO/DIN connector. You might find an example posted in the forum if you search carefully.

You probably should purchase service instructions from MBUSA for your car if you cannot figure it out otherwise.

Thanks for your reply. I went to msusa.com and purchased a 1 day pass to view some radio information. Unfortunately is was not helpful. The only diagrams I could find looked liked a radio diagram of the radio itself. I am hoping to find basic information that shows the radio, what it connects to, does it have an amp? How is it connected to the amp? How to get the radio out, etc. MB has created such a mystery surrounding the radio. Even the most sophisticated radio hookups are pretty basic when it comes to plugging them in together.

What do you mean about the wiring diagram of the radio itself? WIS does not have any diagrams of the internal circuitry of different control units. The only wiring diagram for the radio you can have is covering the connections from/to the radio.

If I had the VIN or at least accurate info about the model (build date and 6 first numbers of the VIN), I could point you a WIS document that has the radio wiring.

Thank you for the offer to get the right document, I really want to see it. The vehicle VIN # is WDBJF55F6TJxxxxxx and is a 1996 MB e320 4 door
So it is a 210.055 with a January 1996 build date and option code 251 radio and 810 Sound System Audio.

I believe the wiring diagram for your car can be found from PE8260U200099B (if you have a head unit with CD changer interface).

The fact that the car has Sound system Audio makes it more difficult to install an after market unit. This amplifier works over copper wire connections and as such is doable, you just have to take care of appropriate signal levels and make sure you avoid zero crossing distortion.

Looks like this one. (4 pages just to get the legend covered)

Awesome information thank you very much. I had not looked at the wiring diagram closely and assumed it was just the radio. I will take a closure look in the morning to see if I can make more sense out of it and get a better feel for how things are connected.

By any chance would you know if there is a radio removal guide on this site? That I could not find at mbusa, although I probably missed and it expires in the morning.

After that I will look into how to interface the after market radio with the existing wires or existing amp if there is one.

Is your radio a single DIN unit? In this case you need the radio removal tools and just pull the radio out (google for mercedes radio removal tools).

I just wanted to confirm, are you saying that Keyhole's post showing the diagram does or does not cover us models?

I ordered a radio removal tool from Amazon. I will get a radio when I understand this system a bit better and know what to get.
