I have stored my SL500 just weeks ago and have put a trickle charger on the battery to keep it from freezing etc...just wondering, should the same be done to the battery in the trunk?

I've read about some people having problems with the ABC aspect? Are there any simple preventative measures that can be taken to avoid the extra expenses? I read something about draining oil and replacing filter etc...is this something that can be done at home or would it be better to have the dealer do it? Thanks Rod

The battery under the hood is the STARTER battery, It doesn't require charging during storage, The battery in the TRUNK NEEDS a charger on it for the Winter!!!

My car is stored in similar weather to yours (I keep it in a barn in Brantford ON)

I pull the car into the spot, remove the front and rear batteries, then tape a block of wood over the trunk latch so it doesn't close and latch (so I can get back in!)

I leave the hood unlatched and close and lock both doors (using the manual metal key)

I have now mastered the process and can get both batteries in (or out) of the car in about 5 minutes and be on my way.

I bring them home and keep them in the basement. That way around the Christmas Holidays I can put them each on my trickle charger for a few days and top them up. Then when I put them back in spring there is enough juice and all is good.

Hi,

I'm up Newmarket way and keep the car in my garage during the winter. I put down insulation foam panels on the garage floor, pump up the tires a bit, lay down vapour barrier plastic over the concrete and drive the car in.

I purchased a CTEK charger from Canadian Tire (similar to this Noco Genius G1100 Smart Battery Charger | Canadian Tire) and installed the quick connector to the REAR consumer battery. The charger itself is screwed onto the side of my garage, and the cord runs into the trunk with the trunk closed. Set it to winter mode and forget about it.

Cover it for the winter and that's it. Never had a problem with anything yet.

I travel daily to Brampton (Rogers on Dixie Rd), so let me know if you have any other questions.

Yes, I have one important suggestion if you are going to start it every week or two.

Make SURE you get it up to operating temperature. This will burn off all moisture in the exhaust, etc.

Dont start and drive it for 3-5 mins like a lot of people do. Get it on the highway for 15 mins minimum and try to drive it a little hard at times. Moderately hard stops are good for brake corrosion etc.
