Hi there. Long time since I've visited the forum I know. First time help request - here we go...


My passenger side wing mirror blows out the fuse. There is a tiny whiff of smoke that came from inside the mirror.

Though Im not a mechanical guy, it seems to me to indicate perhaps some deterioration of the plastic coating of the wires leading to the motor inside, possibly from years of folding back and forth. Laymans guess really...

I wish to disassemble the mirror to a minor extent so I can see inside and maybe identify the problem. If its just wires touching, perhaps a little electrical shrink wrap might house the wires and isolate them from touching and fix it for now. The motor seems to be working (if admittedly only briefly before the fuse goes)

Can anyone point me to a pdf or some kind of basic guide on how to open it up so I can sneak a peek? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the mirrors folded back (if you dare try to move them there) you can probably see enough of the wires to determine if insulation is coming off. Mine was, but the only symptom was the mirrors did not always go into the memory position. If you can't see, then you'll have to remove the assembly from the door, and then the plastic cover from the metal guts.

When we bought our 140, the left mirror's "dimming fluid" was leaking and you could not see much reflection in it. Being a little low on cash for awhile, I opted to just replace the glass, and the less expensive one, which was not the same as the orig...there are two kinds I know of: 1) heated 2) heated & dimmable . Our orig was #2. The glass I got was #1. The connectors are different. Therefore the "heated" could not work...but at least I could see who's behind me.

I coated the wires when I replaced the glass.

Eventually, after much searching for just the rubber seal (both sides were deteriorated a lot) that goes between the assembly and the door and not finding it, I was in a position to buy the mirror new (didn't need a new outside shell) and replaced both sides after about 6 months after coating the wires. After 6 months the coatings were holding up pretty well, but needed a little touching up.

In my experience the glass heaters are probably the main culprit, then affecting the wire nearby.
