Windshield Wiper Motor Replacement

...Step Three: Lube all contacting parts on wiper transmission. You can not see the moving parts inside part of the transmission. There's a small gear that rides inside a reverse gear as the wiper moves from side to side. This small gear being turned is what moves the elbow that is underneath and attached to the main post at its base. This creates the "M" motion the wiper makes. There are three holes you need to line up to be able to spray some white lithium down in there. If you get the post into the vertical position these should line up. Get your straw in there and spray away. Make sure you aim your straw around. Then spray all the visible moving parts. Move everything by hand and repeat your lubing as you see fit...
First, I want to thank "JonzBenz" for taking the time and trouble to create this thread, and all others who've contributed to it. I encountered the same problem that most on this thread have with the damaged wiper motor gears. I found one on eBay from "Discount Auto Parts" for $45 (including S + H) with a 2-year warranty. Hopefully, it will last.

I am currently in the process of reattaching the motor and lubricating the wiper transmission. I have a question for "JonesBenz", but maybe someone else knows as well. Since I have the whole thing off I would like to be as thorough with the lubrication as possible, including the gears and mechanism that moves the wiper in-and-out, but which is not visible.

The problem is I can't seem to follow what you were saying in the part of your post above that is "bolded". You mentioned that if the post is moved into the vertical position there are three holes that line up which allow you access inside to lubricate the gears. I think I might know what you're referring to but I'm not really sure. If I'm looking at the wiper transmission from the front or top (with the post moved into the vertical position) I do see
two holes (not three) that line up; one on the bracket the post is attached to and the other on the surface plate underneath which lies close to the center of the plate. If I stick a small screwdriver down through those two holes, it does seem to go in. I couldn't find anything else which was similar to what you described.

Has anyone else had trouble with this or attempted to lubricate those gears? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I can't thank you enough "Dec" for providing the excellent and detailed picture with the description of where to locate the hole to which "JonzBenz" was referring and for responding so quickly. With your info, I was able to find it without a problem.

I had planned on responding to this thread when I had completed the job (which I pretty much have). I was able to mount the motor, and, with the great posts from "Dec" and "JonzBenz", had no trouble properly aligning the motor and wiper. I had reinstalled pretty much everything. I tested the wiper and it works great and parks properly.

I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but the problem I have is that I cannot get the wiper arm on the post. What's weird is that with the whole assembly off I was able pry it off and slide it back on with some force but without too much trouble. But with the assembly attached, I cannot get the wiper arm to slide on the post. I tried hard to force it to slide down the post to the point I was concerned I was going to damage something. I've quite a bit of time and effort in this and I didn't want to mess it up now that I've come this far.

I know it's supposed to be tough but I don't understand why I can't seem to manage to slide it on the post when it's attached to the car but can with some trouble with the wiper assembly unattached.

I used so much force that there are ridges on the wiper arm where I have tried to force it on the post. I'm really concerned that I'm going to damage something and end up with something even more costly and time-consuming if I have to disassemble things again. It really seems silly that I was able to do everything else without much of a problem but am now hung-up on this.

Any suggestions?

If the hex bolt is still on the end of the arm, remove it, OR you aren’t pushing the arm back on square to the post.

Dec
Thanks "Dec" once again for the expertly detailed and diagramed pictures. The detail really is impressive and the pics are great. You seem to have a pic for every problem. I don't know that I would've been able to properly align the wiper transmission and motor in the proper position without your posts.

I've been meaning to post this response but hadn't gotten around to doing so until now. I was finally able to get it on. I've been known to do some dumb things but trying to put the wiper arm back on with the hex bolt still in place is not one of them. I was attempting to put the wiper arm back with the wiper blade still attached (all as one piece since I removed it that way). After I removed the blade, I was able to get the arm back on pretty easily. I still don't understand why having the blade attached made it impossible.

With the blade off, I lifted up on the arm where it pivots using the spring mechanism and it slid on. It doesn't make any sense that the blade would've changed the angle so much that it would not allow the arm to slide on. After all, I was able to get it started on the post. One would think that applying enough pressure would force it into the required angle once it was on the tip of the post, but I guess not.

Now, I'm trying to replace the rubber cover and gasket for the TeleAid antenna or whatever it's called. Even though I ordered the correct aftermarket replacement part (2000 C230K), the gasket doesn't quite fit and I can't get the rubber cover/mast through the hole of the cap.

I never thought that fixing the wiper would be the easiest part of the job, but I guess that's a testament to this thread. Once again a great big thanks to "Dec" and "JonzBenz" for this thread.

Thank you very much for posting this useful information.Recently I had a situation, when I turn on the wiper, it does not move. My mechanic told me that it is the wiper transmission that is the problem. I got a used wiper transmission and got it replaced. It worked for 2 days.Today when I turn on the wiper, I hear a whirring sound and wiper does not move. I took the car again to the mechanic and now he says wiper motor is bad. I am thinking of ordering the wiper motor from autohaus AZ. Before ordering, how to identify, if the motor is bad or is it something else.

Please advise.

TIA
I, and many others, had a similar problem, but, following the directions in this thread, I was able to fix it knowing absolutely nothing beforehand about wiper mechanisms or motors. The detailed, step-by-step instructions are a great guide.

I saw several recommendations on where to buy a motor, and there are several manufacturers. I looked at Autohaus AZ and there are quite a few options on eBay. I bought mine on eBay from "Discount Auto Parts" (at least I think that's the name). It was about half the price as the Autohaus AZ motors and had a longer warranty (2 year). Shipping was free and delivery was quick too by FedEx. Not trying to push the place, just seemed like a good deal and wanted to pass along the info as an option for others to consider before purchasing. Don't know how durable or reliable the motor is though since I just installed it, but hopefully the longer warranty is a sign of confidence.
