We just bought a new 2009 SL550 (least it looks "new" to us.....chuckle-chuckle).

First experience is the difficulty seeing through the screen via the center rearview mirror. The Op-Manual tells us this might be a problem especially at night.

The second experience is where to store this puppy. The Op-Manual says, "...stored in trunk" and "...store in safe place". HMmmm...do I just toss it loose in the trunk or should it fit in a pre-engineered position? We discoved a sealed bag with two triangular-shaped brackets that hopefully have some relationship to the windscreen assembly. Also in this bag were some tiny metal chips. Does anyone know what I have in my hands?????

Thanks, Don & Margaret

You'll find that the aerodynamics of the SL negate the need for the windscreen. The 33 hairs I have left hardly get mussed up with top down, whereas my new mustang almost sucks my hearing aids out at speed.Enjoy, toss the windscreen.

I have had my SL55 for 5 years. I leave the windscreen on the car. Just fold it down when the top is up. It does help keep the wind down with windows up. And helps maybe 20% with them down. It does cut down on rear view visability. And especially at night. But you get used to it. Use the side mirrors more. Keeping it on the car cures the storage problem too. It does fit in the trunk in its black bag. But you need to put it in there the right way. I leave the roll bar down. But wait till you hit a good bump at speed sometime.
The Roll bar will surprise you and come up on its own real quick. Enjoy !

Hi Don,

My wife prefers the screen up as her hair gets blown about. It does make a difference. I don't suffer from that problem! My screen came in a black canvas bag which is now up in the garage rafters.
I only put the screen on this summer and have just left it on as you forget it's there, when it's folded down that is. Don't know what your metal clips or brackets are as I only had a couple of straps to go round the roll-bar. You do lose a bit of vision in the rear view mirror and I'd imagine a good bit more at night but haven't used it at night - well, I do stay in Scotland.

I do the same thing with my windscreen that I did with my R129 and it works fine.

Always keep it attached to the rollbar, and always keep it down. That way you have great night vision and even during the day can see clearly behind you.

On the really cold days or when you don't want too much of a windy drive, just reach back and flip it up. When done driving that day, flip it back down.

I find it is best to only flip it up "as needed" then put it back down.

Wouldn't live without it. My car didn't come with one and I went out and bought a windscreen for it the same day I bought the car. I bought my SL used and had to wait a few weeks to get it, so I actually had the windscreen before I had the car :) It was that important to me to have one...

I think you have a bag of parts from an Ikea bookshelf. :^) In reality you probably have somehting unassociated with the car. Pop by the dealer parts departmant and ask if you are curious.

The windscreen did not have any extra pieces other than the storage bag. I just leave mine in place and I use it all the time.
