Just a quick question to those in the know.

I had a quote to do a window tint on the ML and they quoted me $AUD350.00 for a darker shade and $AUD50.00 to remove the old (factory option)tint.

Now the question is: I thought that the factory tinted windows are tinted as part of the manufacturing process, not a laid on film afterwards. Is the guy trying to rip an extra $50 of me? or am I delusional and he is correct?

Thanks in advance

I believe that the factory window tint is part of the manufacturing process... In which case, good call on not paying up.

another data point (or anecdote anyway) i have some nasty scratches in the tinting of my ML rear windows - caused by objects in the vehicle....
so my north american MY99 has film.

point of the post is not to share this fascinating minutiae but rather to suggest you could check if you have film on the inside of the glass by trying to scratch the tint.
obviously do this in an inconspicuous place with the smallest tool possible . (razor blade? pin? scalpel? etc)

I know for sure that tinted glass in my North American 1998 ML's was an option (M1 option) and I have seen several without the tint. It looks like crap.
I can only assume that the tint was an option in 1999 also.
I just checked my 05ML and it does not look like an applied film but in the glass. I'm NOT going to try scratching it to prove a point.

Most of the MLs prior to 2001 have packages M1, M5, and 168 in the US.

M5 was not an option in 1998. At least it wasn't called M5. What is the M5 option?
I agree with most early ML's had th M1 option but I have seen a few basic ML's without the M1 package and they look very bland.

Either leather or the sunroof... I can't remember now, but I remember when I was looking to purchase a 320, those were the three numbers that I always looked for. If one was missing, the truck was missing something important.

Package numbers could have changed/been added in 2000 too.

Must have been sunroof because M1 was the leather an tinted glass and a few other little things. M1 did not include the sunroof but it required the sunroof before you could add the M1 package. But that was 1998. My 05ML's packages were completely different so the options do change over the years.
