Window Problem-Please Advise 99 ' ML320

2694 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MarkR
I have a 99 ML320. The right window, when rolled down falls forward towards the front of the doorframe. I have attached a picture with the window about half way rolled down & it is hard to see, but the window has fallen forward in the picture. I assume something in the forward part of the track has broken & I am hoping this might be an easy fix instead of taking it to the dealer & having them replace the whole freakin door!
1) Can anyone please advise me of how to remove the inner part of the door to get to this part to see why this is doing this?
2) Anyone know if this is a common problem & if so what it is & how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help. This site has been great for these type problems. Mark

You will need to remove the plastic door cover from inside to see what's failed inside the door. Remove the cover of the door handle, you will see 2 screws, remove them. Pry off the A cover (inside part that covers the side mirror bolts). Then start prying off tabs that hold the plastic door cover. Use trim removal tool, if you have. You may break some of those tabs, so you may want to go to the dealer and buy some of those tabs.
Look at the diagram below, and #'s 1 & 2 fit in and slide in #3 and #4 fits in and slides in #5. #1 or 2 has broken, causing your problem which means you need a new window regulator, part #163 720 12 46.

Remove the door panel, see pdf below and look for yourself what is broken. Then you have the alternative of doing it yourself, which will require drilling out the rivets and then replacing the regulator, which requires about 6-8 rivets, part #003 990 24 97 and the use of a two handed rivet gun, or you can simply take the truck to any place in your area that installs automotive window glass. They probably won't have the reg. in stock, so ask them if they will install the regulator if you supplied it. These guys can do it in an hr. and a half, probably as you wait. Going to the dealer will be much more expensive.
