Does anyone know a less expensive technique or product that can be used to replace window channel and felt on the windows of a W108. I am not so concerned about OEM replacement for this item when it costs about $600. Thank you

I recently replaced all 4 window channels on my '72 280SEL. I put OEM channel in the front (because I found enough at a cheap price) but put an alternate in the rear. The rear actually perform better than the front.

I purchased it from Restoration Specialties & Supply, Inc. and got their link from the Ponton owners blog Window Channel and Brush Molding for Mercedes-Benz Pontons © www.mbzponton.org

The channel for the rear came in 8' lengths and it took one per window.

I have the part number that I bought at work. I'll try to post the exact part I bought tomorrow. Good prices comparatively. Looks exactly the same.

The part I bought from Restoration Specialties was 8-A-2 on page 8 of their catalog in the 96" length. It was $31 for 8' and one length did one door. They say oversize shipping applies to the 96" length but in reality, they rolled it up and there was no up charge. This beats the $50 - $60 per meter that everyone else seems to want although there are a couple of sites that will sell a 20 meter roll for about $300.00 but that is enough for two cars.

Good lead. I am bumping this for the above part # for WINDOW [email protected] Restoration specialties, as it is the very stuff for my W187 and should fit the Type 170 series of cars.

Pete:thumbsup:

How did you install them in the front, are you able to slide them in from the top, or need to remove the glass?

i had the glass out when I did it but not sure that it is required. I need to replace the front windows again and just purchased a new piece for the driver front door. Funny, but the aftermarket channel in the rear doors is still fine but the front has totally failed

I can’t answer that. It was 12 years ago and I hade the entire car apart including wing windows out and regulators removed.

Perhaps someone else can help.

That's Correct you need to remove the window regulators and the Windows
to change the felting : Basically you need to disassemble the entire inner workings of the window regulator and window from the door and see if the Felting channel is
still good and not rusted out , remove the old Felting channel and install the new Felting and reassemble everything >. Guess what Its a Hard Job rear doors more then the front as removing the window regulators is hard to do on the rear doors. Things are sharp and its easy to cut your hands up with this work BTW , are small Spring clips to remove and Nylon bushings to deal with.
Most People can't do this sort of work that's why it costs the big bucks if you can find someone to do it . :) O Happy Day O Happy Day song comes to mind.
