245s with an offset of 30 that are 8.5 in wide will almost 100% rub on a car with stock suspension and fenders. I'd bet the fronts will give you hell too. Wide wheels with those offsets (30,35) just don't fit right on stock cars.

Would I be ok if I went down to 205/40's all round?

AMG type 2's don't turn up that often within collection distance of me here in the UK and I really want some for the summer! These are a good price as well.

205's will barely fit a 8.5 inch wheel and will give you that streached look. My 8" ET30 SLK wheels with 215s were close and rubbed with a passenger in the back. I tried 205s and thought they looked bad. Normal tire look in the front with the 7" wheels and that 8V Death Squad MK2 streached look in the rear. What kind of suspension mods do you have (if any) Did you do any work with the fenders, making them flair? If not and your not planning on any, I'd stay away from staggered wheels that wide with those offsets. I learned by my SLK experament. They look nice but that's it.

I've got no arch work, not rolled or anything. I was planning a 40mm drop on lowering springs and uprated shocks (bilsteins or something similar). I've got a zender bodykit, so nothing to 'mad'...

You can probabily find a set of replicas in the right size for about the same price new. I just went with 7.5Jx16 ET 38 wheels from an E430 on mine. I'm running 205/50/16 tires. I'm more than happy with the fit and how they look and handle.

Discount Tire sells a Replica AMG wheel in the US for $104.

Here's the link to see what they look like:

Yeah, plenty of replicas are available here, but I really fancied some genuine ones (call me a snob hehe)... I might bid on them in the end and see how I get on... I could always keep them till I get a w210, or just shove them back on ebay.

Thanks for your help all...

Snob. I keep a set of 5 15" BBS RAs around just in case I get the MK2 VW bug again (and I will). If the price is right and you plan at some point to get a 210, why not.

I ordered tires for my SAAB and 190 from them a few weeks ago. I've dealt with tirerack and discount tire in the past for tires, my Dad ordered wheels for the VW a few years ago. No complaints.

Jippi, what size 16s 215/50/16? That seems to be a hard size to find.

Depends on what you want. The Kuhmo AST 16s I got for the 190 in 205/50/16 (you saw 'em) were $68 each from discout tire. Not as quiet as the MXV4s on my 15s but great for the price. The 17s I got for the Saab were Fuzion HRI in 225/45/17 and were $90 each from Tirerack. These tires are very quiet and stickey, I cant break them loose even with traction control off. Nicer than the more expensive and noisy Cooper Zeons that I had before. Hand's down if I could afford Michelins I would get them, since I was buying for both cars I was more budget shopping than peformance and look shopping. Because of the reletively low price I paid for 8 tires and what I got, i can't complain.

Did you end up winning that eBay auction?
Yeah anyway... Let us know. I'd also like to know if you can get those 8.5 to fit in the back without rubbing.

I didn't bother bidding in the end, I watched the auction till closing time and it didn't even make the reserve. I would have loved the look and they were local, but I was afraid of them rubbing. I often have the car loaded up with people so I should probably look at sorting my suspension first.

I might email him and ask him if he wants to do a cash deal, it's only an hour down the road.
