...since most cars on the road don't have airbags of this age, can I assume the airbag will work as long as the SRS light is off. Just curious if the bag will deteriorate or lose some of its integrity prior to deployment. Also, has there been any episodes of pre-deployment due to age etc...

They were optional as far back as '73 in some GM cars, albeit VERY rare, I have video footage of one that was found, drug out of a salvage yard, crash tested and it worked perfectly.

I don't know about MB but the US cars with the first airbags were coated with some kind of powder to keep them from sticking and deterorating. Turns out it was toxic I read one case where a woman inhaled the powder after a minor crash and developed pnemonia from it. I would think that any mold or bacterial critters that are growing in there after all this time wouldn't be good to suck in either.

I'll let you know if and when my 1984 Euro 500SEC's Factory Optional airbag works or doesn't. There are reports of guys setting off air bags in junk yards that are older than ours.

silly question....how do they deploy the bag. Is it removed and initiated through some device or setup...never gave it any real thought.

I kindly tested the airbags in my Honda Accord when they were 14 years old, and they worked perfectly. It made me think that they'd most likely work in my W126 too, since it's only 4 years older than the Accord. I'm SURE that Benz used a better bag than what was in my Honda. (By the way, I got that Honda patched up and it's still going strong with 345,000 miles on 'er.)
